The American Life

I look around me,
At all of the comforts I have,
And I wonder,
If I left them behind would my life
Change for the better.
And she lies on her soft, plush bed,
And looks up at the roof overhead,
And hates the bother with getting up
To turn on the lights to her electronic,
Electric world, if only they could turn on
By themselves.
And I’m wondering how my life would be
Better with a computer with a faster
Modem.
And I look around me,
At all the ways my life has become simple,
And I wonder,
If I left the comforts behind would my life,
Change for the better.
And she feels like knocking somebody out,
These shoes aren’t designer, these jeans aren’t designer,
This outfit is not expensive enough
For this fashion-filled escapade called high school.
And I’m wondering how my life would be
Better with a car that had BMW for the
Insignia
And I look around me,
At all of the ways my life is ridiculously effortless,
And American, and privileged,
And I’m wondering if all of this just disappeared,
And I had to get by on the necessary,
Would my character
Change for the better
I think it would.
