Chocolate Chip Cookies
We thought we could evince a smile
with mom’s secret recipe.
We baked up a delicious batch
of your favorite chocolate-chip cookies.
We knew that you had a frown
and we wanted to melt it away,
we got together with the hopes
of brightening your day.
The drive over was drowned in laughter
that we couldn’t wait to share,
but once we knocked upon your door,
it became apparent you weren’t there.
You didn’t pick up your phone
and we didn’t have a clue,
so we shrugged it off and set them down
and left a message for you.
I drove home in off-note keys
and sped a bit too fast.
A busy day, but full of love,
I guess it couldn’t last.
As I laid within my bed,
about to close my eyes –
my phone lit up and it was my turn
to receive a great surprise.
“We just found her body,”
and the rest was all a daze.
I tried to keep my cool but
my mind spun a hundred ways.
If we were only minutes before,
we might have seen you grin.
We might have saved the day,
but you let the sadness win.
As we carelessly prepared
to make our best friend's night,
you carefully prepared,
and took your precious life.
