Southwest Highway
The ribbon of asphalt stretches
for mile after mile
weaving in and out of the landscape
shimmering in the sweltering heat of New Mexico
the endless yellow line wavers in the
mirage of fresh, cool water
a lonesome car peters past
unaware that the unforgiving highway
cares not for
overstuffed tourists in air-conditioned vans
the car rattles to a stop,
dying
as the cacti look on
