When I Was Little
When I was little
my mother and my sisters
and me
ran away to Alabama
ran away from problems that I won't mention here.
but we were running,
running, running.
I'm not sure
if we
ever got away,
but the night sky on the way to Alabama
sure was pretty,
like nothing I've ever seen
here in Detroit city,
and we were
safe
for a time,
just a small patch of time
when I was little.
