Before I See You
I look like I’ve seen a Ghost, you say,
A deathly pallor upon my face
And silver a-sprouting atop my head
I look as though I were almost dead
I did see a Ghost ‘ere I rushed to your side
He’d glowing hollows instead of eyes
Snow a-lining his hair like lace
I tried to flee from that doomful face
And then he grasped my trembling arm
I drew my breath to sound the alarm,
But a chilling hand encased my lungs
Let his ghastly plan remain unsung
I thought I must die before could see you
I thought I must die ‘ere I’d ever be with you
But I know now I’m most surely damned
As certain as my love for you does stand
For doornail-dead though I may be
I still see that you are only a dream
