With Opened Eyes
She holds the butterfly in her hands.
She has a smile planted on her face.
She begins to touch its wings
Just to have it fly away.
Her heart sinks to the ground
Because she knows that she can never have
The one beauty she sees in her world
And that second chance.
Oh little girl,
I know they tell you “it will be alright,”
That is the truth
But it feels like a lie.
I’m not going to tell you to “believe;”
That word has been used so many times
That it has lost all meaning.
Oh little girl,
I am not going to tell you to face the sun;
I know that’s what you’ve been trying to do all along.
But as you cry,
I want you to
Stand up and
Open your eyes.
We all struggle with this life,
In this world.
And all our efforts seem so pointless
That we break our fragile hope.
Little girl, I’m not going to tell you to hope
Because that is the one other thing
That you have to do on your own.
We struggle for acceptance in this society.
Now it's all about face.
But there is so much more to life,
yet we let it slip by us day by day.
I have faith in you.
Tears streaking down,
Smile in her heart,
She has never felt so alive
When she is falling apart.
Within the world,
Under the sky,
She stands in the shadow
But she opens her eyes.
She holds the butterfly in her hands.
She has a smile planted on her face
She lets it go and watches
It fly away.
