"You are not special; And I am no hero."

Over fifty years ago, in a quiet suburb,
A man promised his girl the moon;
He promised the moon by lasso
A bequeath of love.

I have no lasso, nor the skill
I have not the game necessary to tell you
What countless already know to be true;
I won’t pretend I’m that smooth.

I will pretend that I’m slightly worthy of your company
Or act annoyed when you run your fingers through my hair
Just like you tolerate my constant geek sessions
And donate a pity laugh to my crappy jokes.

Imagine my surprise when
You refused my offer;
With no moon handy I was
Ready to pluck the stars from the heavens.

You said, “That‘s sweet,
But a kiss & ‘I love you’ should be fine.”
Hair flip, flash the blinding white teeth
An unquestionable formula; gets me every time.

Time stops for us as
My lips meet yours,
The chemistry manifesting itself as electricity between us
While bystanders only see two more lovesick kids (That‘s cool, I guess)

As I sit here in your arms
There is no other place I’d rather be;
Just one more touch, a finishing blow
And I’ll fall into pieces.

Your love can make a man
Soar into the clouds;
Your kiss could
Send me to the Moon.

It’s a scary thought,
To say this at such a young age
At such an early stage, but the
Time comes when you’ve got to make that move.

Take that jump.
And if I had to take that jump
A hundred times I would and
I wouldn’t care how many people were there to see me flop.

“Fine! I’ll admit it! You got me open!”
Like no one has before and I couldn’t care less.

Love is like school work sometimes
Complicated as all get up
But so, so necessary.
I believe it to be true.

I can’t promise you that I’d lasso the moon,
But I’d shoot myself up there, land among the stars
And bring one back just to say I did it
And just for you…

The author's comments:
This poem isn't about anyone in particular, but I like it a lot. It's one of the only pieces I've written that I can call one of my favorites. I wrote it off the top of my head. I just had a thought, and remembered what it felt like.
