Re-Gifting
A crying couple keeps quiet and lingers.
A golden ring slips from one of her fingers.
He watches her follow its path to the ground
Then she slips away without making a sound.
A single tear forms in his eye,
As deep as the sea and as blue as the sky.
She marches on, her hands and knees weak
As a single tear rolls past her cheek.
He loses sight of her and crashes to the sand.
She feels like after years of drowning she finally reached land.
He realizes he had to go, he knew he couldn’t win
But she still wishes instead she had learned how to swim.
A few months have passed now, the two carry on.
They haven’t seen each other sing the moment it went wrong.
They live life every day doing every day things
But at night she still weeps and he still holds her ring.
She spots him one day at the grocery store.
He sees her and drops all his things on the floor.
He rushes over, she arrives at his aisle.
They meet, they embrace, they laugh and they smile.
Her vision blurs with tears as she looks into his eyes.
He tells her she’s beautiful when she cries.
They leave hand in hand, abandoning their things,
And he fumbles in his pocket to pull out her ring.
