You influence us to do irrational things
You grip and cling to our heart strings.
Your name is Guilt; you are born where blood is spilt
Because oft after a time of kill, the killer wishes for forgiveness still

He hopes that this transgression doesn’t have to become his lesson
He learns things the hard way; then they send him far away.
From all forms of civilization, far from this cynical nation
To live his last days out, all hope he’s without.

Guilt grips and clings to our heart strings.
Oft after a time of kill, the killer wishes for forgiveness still

Someday he may find (in hiding), the answer to his problems residing
In one single decision seeming, to maybe help his sins redeeming.
He hopes to find a life to save; to become a hero is what he craves
This killer will look in every nook, to counteract the life he took.

When that day comes, and his goal is overcome,
When he saves someone, when his battle is won.
This guilt-ridden person, instead of his position worsen,
He finds himself praised, his name glorified and arms raised.

And through the celebrating, in his mind he’s still debating,
“Am I going insane?
Why do I still feel pain?
Why does the stain remain?”
“I’m a Hero now. Doesn’t that mean,
that by now my slate is clean?”

“No,” Guilt replies,
“it doesn’t even compare in size.”
“The next thing you need to do,
is tell the person closest to you,
That you are the man who killed the boy
Who had a life he’ll never enjoy.
It is your fault he doesn’t live,
It’s you the family won’t forgive.”

Guilt influences us to do irrational things
by pulling on our heart strings.

As ludicrous as it may seem to be
the killer heeds Guilt’s shady plea.
he goes to tell his new found spouse
that the man who “wouldn’t harm a mouse”
Is responsible for another’s death
He is why the boy can draw no breath.
It’s his fault the boy doesn’t live.
It’s him the family can’t forgive.

Oft after a time of kill, the killer wishes for forgiveness still.

“You can’t let this Guilt prevent
you from living your life, full and spent.
Are you the sort of man that hides
from a lack of forgiveness on all his sides?
Or are you instead the sort that decides
that even though in your soul this Guilt resides
What you need to do,” counsels his wife,
“is forgive yourself for taking that life.”

Perchance after a time of kill
Forgive himself the killer will.
