"I was raised to believe that excellence is the best deterrent to racism or sexism. And that's how I operate my life." — Oprah Winfrey

Funny how

How he came out

Out into this world alone

Where he needed anyone in the room

Sad how

How he wants out

Out of this world alone

Away from those nurturers

Who named him Nuisance

Happy how

How he got out

Into the universe

Called Mine

His own creation

Where his friends behave

And his family’s saved

From the depths

Of his cave

The hazed reality he left behind

Where his shell

Cracked and broken

Lies

All the people around his capsule sigh

About how their creation had already died

Funny how

How they never found

Even between the fine line

Of him being dazed

Watching them, not far away

His eyes glazed

Inside his little house of Mine

"When They Visit, They Always Vanish" can be interpreted as a poem where the protagonist is becoming conscious or aware of his own beliefs and needs, instead of mirroring the world's, or the environment he grows up in.
