The Prodigal Sun
The prodigal sun left everything he knew
The sky was first scarlet, then soft lavender, even a shade of blue
Like an angry behemoth the mountains roar
And so the tides change above the ocean floor
The prodigal sun had always watched everything below him grow
And waited patiently as the vast fields melted of snow
Giving life was all he knew
But not once did a creature thank him
Did you?
And then we all saw that once the sun had run away
The world had lost its beauty, no longer amaranthine
But turned to gray
It is not the prodigal sun that should have penitence or shame
But it is us
We have been abusive
We are to blame
Yet the sun grows lonely, His emotions sway
For in time he soon realizes
He was never meant to run away
The vicissitudes of fate finally shake hands
And with open arms the universe stands
So the moon returns and illuminates
The world he had missed the most
Resting there alone in place Of the prodigal sun’s ghost
