In society technology plays a huge role in people's lives, about 77% of people rely too much on technology to succeed. This shows an over-dependence on technology. As time goes on more and more people are becoming too dependent on their devices. There are good and bad things about it but the bad outweighs the good regarding technology. People are very dependent on communicating through their devices, they are starting to abandon personal engagement. Technology has one of the highest impacts on people’s mental health, especially for teens. When society is controlled by technology it causes significant risks.

People are very dependent on technology when it comes to communication. When we slowly started using more and more technology over the years the less we communicate face to face with each other. This has impacted people very much. People need to remember how to communicate with each other in person. We are all so used to communicating through technology. People have started to neglect personal engagement with others, they would rather talk to everyone through technology and avoid talking to others face to face. Now that we rely on technology to communicate with people there is a lot of misinterpretation due to the need for more social cues. As claimed by an article on November 2, 2016, on the Networks Unlimited website entitled “Is Society Losing out on Social Cues Due to Technology”, written by Laura Peters. “Social cues are verbal or nonverbal hints, positive or negative, that guide social interactions or conversations. Over 58% of communication is done through body language, 35% is through vocal tone, pitch, and emphasis.” When we can’t see or hear these ways of communication on technology it can lead to many misunderstandings and confusion. People can come off a different way than they intended online. Communication through technology can be very beneficial but also very dangerous to society. It helps us get messages across more efficiently but society relies too much on technology to communicate with others. Not only does technology affect communication it also affects mental health issues.

Technology has impacted society in a very negative way. It can cause the majority of mental health problems, especially in teens. It can cause a lot of anxiety in the human body, which can cause low self-esteem, satisfaction, and emotional stability. Technology can impact depression or even be the cause of it. It can cause us to be sad and overwhelmed. Technology can also cause many different disorders, including sleep disorders. This is explained by an article last updated on January 5, 2024, on the Sleep Foundation Website entitled “Technology in the Bedroom”, written by Eric Suni. “Technology affects the brain and stimulates the mind, making it harder to fall asleep. Sounds and blinking lights can cause unwanted awakenings when sleeping next to electronics.” When people are dependent on technology they find themselves delaying the time when they go to sleep, which reduces sleep duration. This can disrupt the sleep cycles and patterns. When someone is too dependent on technology it can also interfere with physical activities. As specified by an article last updated in 2024, on the website Kaspersky entitled “How does technology affect your physical health”, written by a Kaspersky author.“According to one study, 38% of parents are worried that their children weren’t getting enough physical exercise due to excessive screen time.” Children are getting sucked into their electronics and they are missing out on physical activity. This can be very harmful to children especially while they are still growing. Technology interferes with mental health a lot, especially in teens.

Teens are a huge problem when it comes to technology. There are so many teens that rely on so much technology daily. Stated by an article from February 12, 2017, on the website Pew Research Center entitled “Main Findings: Teens, Technology, and Human Potential in 2020” written by Janna Anderson and Lee Rainie. “95% of teens ages 12-17 are online, and 76% use social networking sites.” Most teens have a loss of self-control. When they hear or see they got a message they need to check it right away. Even if it is disrupting something they are doing at the moment. They neglect their everyday responsibilities and they can’t resist going on social media. Teenagers are most likely to experience FOMO sometime throughout high school. They always want to be included in everything and can’t control themselves to put their devices down. A lot of teens are severely addicted to technology. This can create problems with mental health as well. Around half of teens admit to being addicted to their smartphones. Some studies show that teens spend around nine hours a day online. Teens are just way too dependent on technology and the majority can’t control it.

Society is so dependent on technology that they miss out on important things throughout their life. They don’t realize they are missing life's beauty and the things they need to cherish the most. They forget how to interact with humans. Social phobia has a huge impact on some people's lives. They stress about everyday interactions; it causes significant anxiety, embarrassment, and self-consciousness. When everyone is too worried about social relationships, they neglect the exciting parts of their life. People dependent on technology forget about the key factors we need. When individuals are on technology we don’t get as much physical activity and it can result in many health risks. Without physical activity, it can cause muscle and joint pain, obesity, eyestrain, and back/neck problems. When we get sucked into technology we can forget about the everyday pleasingness.

In society, people are becoming way too dependent on technology. More and more of the population are becoming addicted. We communicate with each other more on technology than ever before. This is making people neglect face-to-face conversations. There is a problem with online conversations; they are very misleading and people can misinterpret things. Technology has such a high impact on people's mental and physical health, mostly in teens. It causes so much anxiety in the body and causes many different disorders. People get sucked into their devices and they skip out on physical activities. Overall technology plays a huge role in the everyday life of society, but slowly people are becoming more and more dependent on it.
