Drinking Age Should Be Lowered

May 18, 2008
By Anonymous

People use alcohol for numerous reasons; peer pressure, celebration, anxiety, sadness, boredom, rebellion and insomnia are just a few. Teens fall under the category of “people”. The legal drinking age is currently twenty-one, but illegally drinking age is as low as zero. Why? Is the main question asked. I can assure you the under age drinking age percentage would drop if the age is lowered.

Few reasons for teens drinking are: peer pressure, enjoyment, etc. But the main reason for doing so is “breaking the law.” 87% of high school seniors have used alcohol. That means that a large quantity of teens under the age of seventeen to eighteen have used alcohol before. We all know why teens drink, I mean is common since. Just the feel that they get of breaking the law is huge. Being rebel and not following the rules is an important role of a teen’s life. Consequences are the one that change them, but we don’t want them to experience the consequences of being under the influence of alcohol because we know them and they are fatal. Dying in a car accident and killing others is a mess that we don’t want to clean.

Despite the fact that is illegal for young teens to purchase it, they are able to get it through their parent’s own liquor cabinets, unscrupulous store clerks, or older friends who purchase it for them. As we all see, is not hard for teens to obtain alcohol. Why not lower the drinking age then? I mean any way you put it, they are getting it.

We have all heard of the famous saying “we want you to join the military and protect your country.” Blah blah blah. Well, you are telling me that I can legally kill someone at the age of eighteen, while I sign up with the military and go to war but I can’t have a sip of alcohol. Due to this none senseless situation, age should be equaled. In other words, if voting and military sign up is eighteen, then drinking should also be eighteen. Besides at the age of eighteen you are legally an adult. Why can’t we drink then?

Drinking age in Australia is eighteen, and in UK is as low as sixteen in restaurants. Studies have showed that those teens/adults are perfectly fine. In fact, Dr. Ruth Engs; professor of Applied Health Sciences at Indiana University in Bloomington, uses this examples to propose the following: “……the drinking age be lowered to about 18 or 19 and permit those of legal age to consume in socially controlled environment such as restaurants and official school and university functions” (direct quote from Dr. Engs).

Drinking age should be lowered, and I know that by lowering it we can drop the percentage of reckless teen alcohol abusers. It is worth trying it , and if everything goes the opposite then change the law once more (which is done lots of times, for dumb reasons) and raise the drinking age back to twenty-one. Changes are always good (most of the times), and I know this one in particular is an excellent one.

I agree with the whole they will still get it any way possible but no the drinking age shouldn't be lowered because of how irresponsible american teen are and how careless we are. Take Germany for example as long as you can see over the counter you can drink and smoke. Canada drinking age depends on the province but usally its 19 beacuse teens there are more responsible then teens in america so if we pull it together maybe then..

(People use alcohol for numerous reasons; peer pressure, celebration, anxiety, sadness……)

But does it really solve the problem? you honestly think that this would be a good idea?

NO!!! It is not, people need to deal with the root of their problems not just to ‘feel better’ by drinking.  By lowering the age limit you are saying: hey kids, alcohol is okay that means you can buy it and drink it any day.

This is ridiculous, first alcohol kills your brain, causes you not to think straight, causes hangovers, reckless driving, irresponsible behavior, liver failure and so much more. But oh, go ahead kids because it is legal!

This is just plain stupid. Teens will not stop drinking alcohol just because it is legal, they would drink just how some adults do, and adults drink because they can! Not because they ‘feel bad, or that there a tough guy’

Come on, this is a pointless argument. Lowering the drinking age would make things worse, not make it better.

I really don't care much about this issue, just like I don't care about the "Should Football be Made Safer" issue, and many more. My one opinion is that alcohol affects the brain, and if you drink (too much of) it before your brain is fully developed, it could harm your brain. I don't plan to drink until I am 21 no matter what happens with the drinking age. However, that is just my humble opinion.

You're unique, just like everyone else.

Good points. Though, you figure whats the point of lowering the age if its going to lower the amount of lower aged drinking? Of course it will because they won't be underaged anymore! Just saying.

"All who are not wandering are lost." -A quote without a byline that I read in the editorial section of "The Santa Barbara Independent."

To be brazenly honest (Ah, how people hate that!) I think that when people drink alcohol, it's a blunt statement : "I'm not interesting, nor do I understand how to enjoy life." Alcohol is a false illusion, and a supposed gateway to a different identity and persona. It's a reminder of how widespread the issue of low self-esteem is, and it's a frightening portrayal of how boring and dull young people are. Think of it! We're at our youngest, our most vibrant, our most beautiful, and yet we shadow ourselves into bleary-eyed fools, profane and lustful. We endanger others with our recklessness, we damage our brains, our bodies, ourselves, and we think not of the effects. It's a waste of youth, and a waste of money.

Don't you understand?

The reason the drinking age is the way it is is due to the factor brains are not fully develped untill they're in its 20s.

I'm in a very small miniority. I think that alcohol and drugs should not be allowed at all for any age anywhere.

i used to long for the day when the drinking age would be lowered... thank god it isnt. as a full blown alcoholic by age 15, i knew alcohol and drugs were destroying me. 5 months sober and almost 17 years old... just for today i will not have that first drink

(couldn't think of anything better at the time) "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."-Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.

the military age is that young on purpose. when people are young, they feel invincible, like they can live forever. older people know better. the age is that low so that--while we're still young and stupid--we go off to war without thinking of the consequences. so why is it okay to use us for our sacrifices, but not for us to drink alcohol? i'm not saying we should lower the drinking age, but something needs to change. either raise the military age (if we're so very incapable of making the the choice to drink, why are we being given the responsibility of ending a life?) or lower the drinking age (if we're so very willing to die for our country, i think we can handle a beer) either way, you can't put a gun in my hand, point me at your enemy, and say "go get 'em" but then tell me, "oh yeah, i know you just sacrificed your life for your country, but i don't think your mature enough to handle that beer." so make a choice.

Lets not forget the simple physiological fact that a human's brain is not fully developed until they are 21, and the effects of alcohol on a developing brain can have adverse effects on all aspects of brain function. So the drinking age is not only set for a maturity reason, but for a basic health concern as well.

I completely agree with the article. If the reason for the drinking age to be 21 is that at 18 were still not mature enough to handle the responsabilities that comes with drinking, then why is it that we can join the military and go off and maybe die? So at 18 were not mature enough to drink but we are mature enough to go get ourselfs killed??

i wanna die and look at the same time...why cant i do that?

lol..i dont agree to lowering the age ONLY because itll give 18 year olds the privelage to drink and drive to a certain extent of course which they will not obey. besides the DUI and drunken driving i see no reason why not to lower it.

dont blame alcohol because of americas laziness and lack of intelligence. when america is the fattest, and also behind china, korea, inda, spain, and other countries in SAT scores.

quick note for everyone, america has the worst sat score but we have the most confidence in the SAT then any other country..

thats pretty sad and that is a true satistic you can lookup>> must be an abundance amount of cheap vodka circulating the school buildings at 9am in math class

i think you should rethink what is the real issue here.

Of course the underage drinking percenage would lower! Now kids would legally be allowed to get drunk. People make bad decisions when they're under the influence of alcohol. Just look at how many people have died from drunk-driving accidents.
