Why are we so anti-technology? It seems like no matter where you go, nowadays, there is a sign saying, “No Wifi, Talk To Each Other,” or an elderly person shoving their “back in my day” beliefs down your throat. Suddenly, we are “addicted to our phones,” as opposed to utilizing the amazing piece of technology in the palm of our hand. We have the ability to communicate with someone on the other side of the planet in an instant with the ease of simply speaking, and we are supposed to believe this is a bad thing? Many people claim that texting is taking away our ability to communicate with a “real person” in a social setting. In reality, it simply enhances the relationship we have by giving us a constant, direct line of contact, the depth of which is ours to choose. Enhancing one thing doesn’t mean you are taking away from another.

There are so many teenagers who were born in the era of technology that have never lived a day without a phone in their hand. Yet somehow, these very same people will not hesitate to say they wish they were born in the 50’s, when times were simpler. News flash: we had polio in the 50’s. Do you know why we don’t have polio anymore? Advancements in modern technology. We are not being held captive by the digital age, we are being set free  of the bindings of disease, the miles separating us from the ones we love, and an endless number of other barriers. If you honestly believe we would be better off without modern technology, feel free to roll back to your fire-lit cave on your big stone wheel, where you and your family will die of an easily curable sickness. Whatever floats your driftwood raft.
