French is hard
Bonjour, bienvenue à Paris, have you every dreamed of speaking the beautiful language of Paris? But, this language is actually very difficult to learn. There are many things to learn like tenses and accents, spelling and vocabulary, not even mentioning pronunciation and conjugating.
In the French language there are many accents and hyphens to learn, most words or phrases have an accent. If you write and accent wrong or add an accent to the end of a word that doesn’t belong, it can change the word completely or entirely or make the whole word wrong. Following that, words can have more than one meaning based on how you use them, in a sentence or phrase. For example, the word Est, in french means what, but if you use it in another context with other words, Est-ce que(is), it can mean another word. Also the word a and à mean two different things(based on the context). The word a means the or at,but the word à can mean on. Staying on topic there are many different ways to ask questions or say something. Earlier, I mentioned that the word Est, by itself, what but if you add the ce que it now reads (in some contexts) is but to say where you only change one word, and that word is Est. You would replace Est with the word Òu, which makes the phrase where, or where is that. The spelling in french, is difficult from english spelling. A lot of word that are long in english, are short in french, and some short words in english are longer in french, the word for ATM in french is le distributeur de billets.
Moving forward, french is still a hard language to learn. The manners are very different from the U.S manners that I’m used to. Based on what i’ve been taught, in France, saying certain things to people would be considered rude, for example in a restaurant, if you’re a waiter you have to serve your customers with respect, and you must be professional. Waiters serve their customers as fast as possible, and try to help them find what they want or need, but if you call a waiter by garçon,means boy ,it is considered rude and you will get poor, slow service. That is just one example of how you can insult, or be rude accidently to someone in France. There is one more factor that I have to prove that French is a hard language, verb conjugations. In the english language you can say word in different tenses, like I have and She has. In french there is a different way of using and writing the tenses. For this example i will quickly show you how verbs are conjugated(certain verb types are conjugated differently) the verb I will be demonstrating is the verb manger, meaning to eat. You start like this…
Je mange- I eat
Tu manges- You eat
Il / Elle mange- He/ She eats
Nous mangeons- We eat
Vous mangez- You eat (referring to a group of people)
Ils / Elles mangent- They eat
This is the present tense of the verb they are many more tenses in the french language, that are very different from the present tense like the past tense
J’ai mangé- I ate
Tu as mangé- You ate
Il / Elle a mangé- He/She ate
Nous avons mangé- We ate
Vous avez mangé- You ate
Ils / Elles ont mangé- They ate
French is a a very easy language to learn, that in many ways is similar to english.
The french language has many rules, but most of those rules have a pattern.
Like with the present tense, certain verbs have the same ends and follow the same rule, example…
the verbs arriver, acheter, and danser all follow the same conjugation rule
Je arrive, achete,danse
Tu arrives,achetes,danses
Il/Elle arrive,achete,danse
Nous arrivons, achetons,dansons
Vous arrivez,achetez,dansez
Ils/Elles arrivent,achetent, dansent
These verbs all follow a pattern, so if you learn the patterns in the french language then it becomes easier. Also a variety of word in the french language and the english language are similar, of are almost the same. These words are either very obvious or make sense making learning vocabulary and learning words easier, for example the word l’hôpital, means the hosptial in english and the word bank means bank which is very obvious as you can tell. Things like this in the french language make things very easy, not only that but this language is very common in the world and many americans today speak this language. This shows how easily the language catches on and can be learned. These following things prove that the french language is an easy language to learn.
The french language is very difficult to learn and there many be patterns but those patterns can also be easily broken by verbs that don’t follow the rules or as you call them irregular verbs the verb aller is a -er verb that doesn’t follow the -er pattern.
Je vais
Tu vas
Il/Elle va
Nous allons
Vous allez
Ils/Elles vont
This is how you conjugate the verb aller in the present tense, and this verb breaks the pattern. the only way to learn french verbs properly is to learn them all through memorization and hard work. Patterns will only confuse you and make the language harder to learn, although you can use them. The other thing is that there is are some word in french and english that are similar but if you go by that than, you could also confuse yourself, there are word in the french language that look like english words but mean a different thing. The word cacahuète sounds similar to the english word cochato, which is a bird, but cacahuète means peanut butter in english. Also the fact that many people speak the language doesn’t mean that that it is easy to learn. The french SAT scores speakers for nonnative speakers was as a group 3.21, that was the average score and that score isn’t the highest score, many people may speak french but that doesn’t make it easy.
French is a very difficult language to learn, with all the accents, conjugations, etc. With all of these things to learn, the language is very difficult to learn and speak. After reading this article will you challenge yourself to learn French?
