A “Wicked” Awesome City

Claim: Boston is the best city in the United States.

New York City flaunts their Yankees, Detroit brags about their automobiles, and Boston… well, Boston doesn’t quite have the need to show anything off! This is because there is not just one thing this city has to be proud of. Instead, there are a ton of competitive advantages that Boston has over other major U.S. cities. Sure, I might be biased, having been born and raised in and around this great city. The facts are on my side, though. With 75 hospitals, and leading healthcare programs, such as Harvard and Tufts Medical Schools, Boston offers outstanding healthcare to its community. Bostonians enjoy award-winning fine dining, including many gastronomic treats, such as seafood from its very own shoreline. Culture is rapidly spreading with the help of the city’s 40 museums, designed for toddlers, adults, and everyone in between. So, how much do you think you may know about this incredible city?

Have you ever gone through any type of procedure at a hospital? What do you think it takes to operate on someone whose life may be at risk? Well, here is where these guys come in: Many extremely bright students and doctors from all cultures over the world work in Boston. Similarly, many great colleges and care centers are located in the city, including Tufts, Harvard, MIT, and the Boston Children’s Hospital. Therefore, it makes sense that some of the brightest college students choose to apply their knowledge to working at some of the major hospitals, right? For the reasons above, the concentration of college-educated residents increased significantly from 2000. During the last decade the population of Boston grew, became younger, more college-educated and more racially and ethnically diverse. In fact, according to the American Community Survey (ACS), the proportion of college-educated residents in Boston is not only higher than that of the country, but has grown substantially over the last several decades.

“Mommy! Daddy! I’m hungry!” Every parent dreads those words coming from their child. But, if you are in the city, there is no need to fear: Boston is packed with delicious, as well as very famous, restaurants, cafes, and dessert places; some of which you cannot find anywhere else in the world. For instance, at the Hub, you can eat delicious, yet not too expensive, food as you look out the huge glass window to see an up-high, panoramic view of the city. Who wouldn’t want that? Nevertheless, dining at the Union Oyster House, the United States’ oldest continually-operating restaurant, is nothing to take for granted. Even one of the presidents, John F. Kennedy, loved to enjoy himself some fresh Boston fish! The North End, famous for its abundance of traditional Italian food, is the place to be. Tresca, as well as the original Pizzeria Regina, are just a few of the most amazing Italian restaurants and pizza places in Boston. Mike’s Pastries, a shop that makes coffee, cakes, cannolis, and more is always packed with people. Just ask any of their customers: they make the best cannolis in the world!

Numerous museums filled with some of the most dated, one-of-a-kind, unique art from all over the world are located in the city of Boston. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, believe it or not, holds 2,000 masterpieces and counting. Around 20 years ago, the largest heist in history occurred, when the Vermeer and the Rembrandts were stolen. The majority of the artwork was from Europe. Also, its features include spectacular architecture and a venetian courtyard. If you ever have the chance to experience it for yourself, you really should consider doing so. Trust me, your jaw will drop in awe! Furthermore, the Museum of Fine Arts houses over 450,000 pieces of Art, and has many interesting exhibits that change frequently. The Museum of Science, however, has over 700 interactive exhibits, all with hands-on activities that will engage all visitors, and brighten the minds of all ages. It has virtual tours, IMAX theaters, and Planetariums. Because of its popularity, based on the museum is a college for the purpose of making and learning about art and its history. How neat is that! This year, 756 people applied, and 86 percent of those applicants were admitted. Clearly art adds to the unique aspect of Boston city.

Counterclaim Paragraph

Other people from other cities in the U.S. might argue that New York City is the best. That claim would make sense because of the fact that New York is not only larger than Boston, but is far more famous for destinations like Times Square, the Empire State building, and its traditional diners. I disagree with this, however. Yes, Boston has well-known buildings and restaurants, as does New York City, but little does everybody know the history behind the founding of Boston and how the magical city in Massachusetts was brought up. Boston was founded in 1630 by a Protestant religious sect called the Puritans. They named the new town for their former home in Lincolnshire, England. The same year, Boston was declared the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Bounded on three sides by water, Boston soon became the colonies' major New England seaport and the largest British settlement on the continent as well. When the Massachusetts Bay Colony's charter was revoked in 1684, Boston for the first time was subject to direct British authority. Just as important, the horse ride of Paul Revere, the Boston Tea Party, and the Revolutionary War all contributed to the history of this iconic city. The Freedom Trail, for instance, lets visitors not only see a multitude of fascinating buildings and landmarks that are part of our American history, but also let them get to see much of Boston as it is today. On the night of April 18th, 1775, The Old North Church became a symbol of America’s fight for Independence as two lanterns were lit from the church steeple to signal that the British were coming to Lexington and Concord by sea; sending Paul Revere on his now legendary ride into history. Nevertheless, The U.S.S. Constitution remains permanently moored in Boston as a proud reminder of the nation’s early naval development and its pivotal role against the British in the War of 1812 and more. Who knew the history of Boston tied so much to England and Britain?

As you can tell from reading this editorial, Boston, Massachusetts, is the number one city in the United States of America without a doubt. First off, it has tremendous hospitals and healthcare centers; an abundance, actually. Some of the most delectable, friendly and welcoming restaurants are located in the city; some of which you can only experience in “Bean Town.” Obviously, the many museums that continue to influence Bostonians are effecting the city for the better. Aside from its long list of assets today, this wonder-filled city is full of impressive history that lead to its founding. What’s not to love about Boston? Nothing. And that is the reason why I am almost certain that I know where your family will travel next!
