Is tipping necessary

Just getting done at a tennis tournament, hopping on to the bus on the way to Olive garden. Running through the doors and finally getting seated, everyone orders their food and we get great service. Finally, everyone finished their meal and then the checks come out, Individually sorted by what everyone ordered. Looking down at the check, taking the money out that my parents left for me, then realizing I don't have enough to tip the waiter. The guilt starts to set in thinking about how great the service was and how kind they were to accommodate the whole team. All this could be resolved if we just got rid of Tipping. The whole point of tipping is to praise someone for their good service but sometimes we don’t even get that. Even the definition of tipping is “  to give someone who has provided service an extra amount of money to thank them”  But I think it shouldn't be expected to tip and here's why.

First of all, there is a huge race and gender bias, there have been tons of articles that have said people prefer to have a server or a cashier of the same race as them. According to “ecommons” consumer racial discrimination in tipping published by Lynn Michal dated January 4, 2016, in the United States there was a study on tipping taxi drivers, passengers tipped white drivers more than black drivers. In addition, it’s been shown that people of color have way lower wages, for the same reason there is also a huge gap where men and women are tipped. Furthermore, a man will tip a woman more to flirt with her or to show status and wealth, also it is a way for the man to show the waitress that he is capable of taking care of her. In addition, It has been shown that if a person likes their server off on the way they look they will tip 44% more than what they would usually tip. But men sometimes tend to work harder at their restaurant jobs to try and get higher tips.

Working for higher tips is a great thing but, one of the biggest reasons people don't tip is because they just don't carry around enough money or cash to be more exact. Also, people just can’t afford to give tips to waiters/waitresses. According to “Bleacherrepot” Tiger Woods tipping published by Matt Fitzgerald dated July 23, 2015, Tiger Woods who is ranked second in the men's golfing championship has said, he doesn't carry around cash or extra money to tip his waiters/ waitresses. Other people have also said they wouldn't need to tip servers if they got paid more because there barely make minimum wage. As I have said a lot of waiters and waitresses are making about 7.25 dollars an hour I have gotten paid more for, babysitting, and that is a massive issue cause how should a child be able to make ten to thirteen bucks an hour,  and an adult who pays bills and has to pay rent or for a house makes so much less.

Even though servers are not getting paid as much as they should be, but the money that they are getting tipped is for how their service was. Because how is it that we are expected to pay servers but they are already getting paid by their employers and who expect them to serve food for the guest because it's their job. According to ”Russel Lolacher '' 5 reasons not to tip or expect a tip February 5 2016 published by Russel Lolacher, the service did not add to my experience at the restaurant.  Just bring my food, that is what the job is. Research has also found that people just tip because it is a social norm. All so when there is an issue with the quality of the service it shouldn't come out of the server pay. It's likely the company's fault because it is the company's job to train and give good service. But it has been shown taking away tipping makes restaurant prices go up.

As the prices go up the customers get angry, it has been shown that when a customer goes to a restaurant they are mainly looking at the menu price. Even with the menu prices going up, people don't have to tip 10-20 % now. Most of the time tips aren't even enough to get servers over minimum wage, and that's why restaurants have thought about going to a tipless-style restaurant. According to “nypost '' What happens to restaurants when they go tip-free published by Addy Bank dated July 30, 2022, the Swizyard Brewing company the owner took tipping away, and now he pays his employees at least 15 dollars an hour, though they did have to raise their menu prices. That made a huge difference for their restaurant because he was getting bad reviews about their food being overpriced. But really he just raised his price by about 10%  so people didn't have to tip.

In conclusion to all that I have said about racial and gender bias, how people say they feel obligated just to give a tip cause it is the right thing to do, that servers would get paid more than what they were making which is almost below minimum wage, and that people just do not carry around extra cash. All these things come together to tell why we shouldn't tip waiters or waitresses, taxi drivers, or whatever else people tip to. Because being that one person sitting in a restaurant thinking about how they don't have enough money to tip their server, even if they did get great service and they did accommodate everyone in the team group, you still didn't have any extra money to tip the server.
