Star-Crossed
Author's note:
I am 16 years old, looking towards my first publication; I've always had a strong passion for books and along the way, i've grown into enjoying writing fiction stories.
Star-Crossed
Professor Reid stood in front of his desk. With the one and only, Amara Brookes staring intensely at him with her narrow brown almond eyes, thick square framed glasses rested on her nose. Dark curly hair hung past her shoulders, tucking a few loose curls behind her ear when some came out of the cluster. As Professor Reid continued to admire her, Amara waved her hand in his face, trying to regain his attention.
“Amara.”
“Professor Reid.” she replied, while looking up at him, batting her eyelashes with a head tilt. Which he only returned by shoving his hands in his pockets.
“How was your evening sir? I asked you before but you didn’t answer me.”
Reid chuckled softly, knowing she knew exactly how his evening went. She just wanted to tease.
“It was quite nice actually, I got some grading done without any interruptions” he replied, to which Amara took her turn to chuckle at.
“Yeah, sure. Though you love those ‘interruptions’ ”
Reid stared at her, intrigued by her boldness, but also how right she was.
Amara held eye contact with him. His intense stare caused her to shift uncomfortably in the office seat. .
Did I take it too far? she thought.
Reid took note of her flustered state and lightly smiled to himself, they finally both looked away when a knock came from his door. Before he could stand up fully from leaning on his desk, the door shoved open. Amara already knew who it was by the sounds of the 6 inch stiletto heel entering the room. Mrs. Reid. The girl turns around and sees the slim woman standing confidently, secretly knowing she’s nowhere near that; with her arms crossed tightly over her buttoned up blouse. She clears her throat and Amara turns her head.
“Aaron Reid.” she sternly said.
“Veronica. I am working. Leave.”
Veronica tilts her head, locking eyes with Amara. She scoffed and turned her head, to which Amara rolled her eyes.
One thing leads to another, and Amara finds herself being yelled in her face by a raging Veronica while Amara is being protected by Aron’s arm in front of her, as if he’s guarding her. The intense argument between the couple intensified. Amara crossed her arms over her chest firmly, starting to grow annoyed.
I don’t have to be here right now She thought to herself, which resulted in her turning away from the two, where she grabbed her stuff and headed towards the exit. Before she could, Amara felt a strong tug on her arm almost causing her to almost fall.
“I’m not done with you, slut.” The room grew quiet, though Veronica's lips were still moving. She stared straight at her, dropped her bag and asked
“What did you just call me?”
The name itself is shameful, her relationship with her Professor is inappropriate, but she didn’t know who he was until after the fact..yet they never decided to stop. Fine, she could deal with it from a random stranger on the street, or some girl in school mad about something petty, but her? Coming from Veronica? Amara has dealt with many things but certainly not disrespect, and it’s definitely not going to start now.
Aron lightly stepped back, knowing what was going to follow the given question.
“I tried.”
He sighed out, completely giving up on trying to resolve further problems.
“You heard me sl-”
Before Veronica could finish the word, her cheek slowly started to sting from the impact “Watch your mouth.” Amara breathed out, trying to restrain herself from doing further. She stared at Veronica who visibly looked shaken. She glanced at Aron, who was already looking at her. Words being shared between the two, not verbally, but through their eyes.
While making the trip to her living room area, Amara’s mind raced into all the possibilities of the guest awaiting at her doorstep, Until her mind paused on one person. Aron. She took a deep breath before unlocking and opening her door. Amara was met with a messy haired Aron. She took in his look; discomfort and hurt wrote deeply on his features.
“Aron? Are you ok?” her voice laced with concern
He stared at her, as he always does whenever he speaks with her. Aron's hand fell upon her waist, pushing her back into the apartment and closing the door behind him, with his other hand.
“Mara.” His voice cracked, calling out her name. It fell sweetly off his lips
“Mara. I’m so sorry” at this rate, tears were streaming down his face. Aron felt his legs tremble when Amara's arms wrapped around him. He fell to the ground, with her following closely behind.
What is going on
The question could no longer sit on her tongue, her anxiety getting the worse of her, she couldn’t deal with seeing him so, beat up.
“Aron, what happened?” She softly voiced out, barely above a whisper. Aron wouldn’t have been able to hear her if he wasn’t looking so deeply at her.
‘She’s pregnant.”
Amara flinched, blinking harshly. Her stomach dropped and a scoff made her way out her lips. She didn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe it. But the look on his face when she first opened the door, the way he called out to her and broke down, the way he’s looking so deeply at her. She knew it was true.
“What? You guys weren’t active when I came into the picture, that’s what you told me. Did you lie to me?”
She felt her throat tighten and a heat envelope around her body. Disbelief and confusion: evident, and heavy, in her tone.
“That is what I told you, because it is true. Mara, I would never lie to you. It’s most likely before I met you.”
“Then why is she just now saying something?” Amara quickly fired back. Her once soft tone became stern.
Aron pressed his lips in a firm line, he didn't know.
“She’s lying to you.”
Amara crossed her arms over her chest defensively.
“What?”
“She is lying to you, no pregnant woman would scream like that for hours, let alone no woman who is MONTHS pregnant can be THAT slim.” Amara started to grow angry. She manipulated him, and she knew she did. Why can’t he realize it too?
“Amara.” Aron said, but this time it didn’t sound soft like before, it sounded like a warning; Amara could care less, she could smell the lies. The manipulation. The bullsh*t.
“She’s suddenly pregnant after I slap her? Maybe I didn’t slap her hard enough.”
She lets out roughly, uncrossing her arms and beginning to make her way towards her room, completely disregarding the conversation, disregarding him.
“Amara ENOUGH”
his voice boomed through the small space of her living room. Amara quick on her feet pushed his hand away
“Do NOT touch me and yell at me IN MY HOME. You’re so gullible. Don’t be stupid Aron.”
She felt tears gather in her eyes, not sure if it’s from anger or the deep emptiness that’s been blossoming since this conversation started.
“SHE’S MANIPULATING YOU. OPEN YOUR EYES ARON. WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES YOU SO GULLIBLE WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO HER?”
She poked his chest harshly while speaking, walking backwards while yelling in his face. To which, Aron returned
“MAYBE BECAUSE SHE’S MY WIFE”
Aron shouted back. Voice bellowing down and around her halls, causing the girl to flinch. Not by the pressure of his voice but his words.
“Don’t pull the wife card on me.” she breathed out, trying to stand her ground, knowing it hit her where it hurt.
“Well I just did.”
Amara blinked and stepped back, the true emotion she’s felt this whole time coming to show. Tears rapidly fell from her eyes. She took the little strength she had left
“She wasn't your wife then, or before. She hasn’t been your wife since you’ve met me. Now, since she brings up your imaginary child, she’s your wife.” She swallowed the cry that desperately wanted to escape her lips.
“Aron. I love you.”
voice cracking when she muttered the words, feeling the air thicken around her. Never breaking eye contact with him. Trying to take in everything, desperately searching for anything that could lead to the confirmation of him loving her back. Before he could think, Aron found himself muttering the same words.
“I love you, Amara.”
he felt relief fall off his shoulders, and heard a light breath fall from Amara's lips
“So who is it going to be? Me or her.”
He couldn’t find himself to say the words. It was on the tip of his tongue, he could feel his throat vibrating desperately wanting to say it. But he couldn’t. The words were so true, he knows it will always be her. Knowing it will always be Amara.
Amara already knew the answer. His silence and hesitation spoke for him. Her heart tore, and she stumbled backwards. Trying to get away from him, from the situation, from this feeling.
“Get out”
She repeated, over and over. Her voice went from a whisper to yelling. Aron stood there, his own eyes watering
“Mara. Please, I'm so sorry.”
“Sorry? Oh you’re sorry? HE’S SORRY!” she laughed out; throwing her hands up, crying even harder.
“Aron please, I love you and I know you love me. Why are you doing this to me?” `The man did nothing but stare at her, which broke her heart more. Amara picked up a nearby vase, and smashed it on the floor “ANSWER ME.” Aron stepped back quickly from the smashed vase; causing him to fall.
He breathed heavily, eyeing the mess, looking up he expected to see her face, but was met with the harsh slam of her door causing paintings on her walls to shake from the impact. He sat there, slowly feeling himself breakdown. He quickly got up and brushed off the feeling.
“I’m going to see my pregnant wife. When your tantrum is done let me know.”
Aron never saw or heard from Amara again.b
