A Free Place
I'm driving down an old road music up high, nobody in sight perfect. I’m all alone, I feel like I can go anywhere I want to go, it's peaceful. When I’m in my car it feels like all of my troubles just run away. I can think and let my thoughts choose my path.
My house is like a demolition derby, everyone is against everyone else, the dog is barking at a squirrel outside, the cats are doing whatever cats do, my parents are arguing about what they should do with all the animals, and I’m stuck in the middle of it all. It’s almost time to start preparing dinner, my parents go to get the meat and they realize that it is all frozen as hard as a rock. “Kevin” my mom shouts,” I want you to go and get something for dinner”.” Where do you want me to go” I ask.
“Here’s twenty dollars go and get some Chinese.” She hands me a twenty dollar bill and gives me my keys.
“What all do you want me to get?”
“You just go up there and I will order it all.”
Then I’m on the road again going as slow as I can so I can make the ride last as long as I can. People are passing and some do not look very pleased about me going five miles under the speed limit so I speed up a little. Once I get to town I stop at the Chinese place to get the food and they tell me that it is not ready yet. So, I go cruising around town. I swing by the park first, then the school, and finally I stop at the gas station to get my family drinks. After that I stop by the Chinese place and they give me my food, and I start heading home. About a mile down the road I have a choice, go the short way or go the long way that adds about five minutes to the ride. I go the long way but I’m going a little faster than the speed limit it feels like my car can take off and soar with the eagles. When I get back home I bring the food into the house and me and my parents eat and then they start arguing again. I finally got irritated and cleaned up my spot at the table and went outside. While I was outside I walked around for a little bit and played with my dogs. After a while I got sick of that so I sat in my car and I relaxed. It was quiet and peaceful.
