What Type of Person Do Others Expect a Pakistani to be?
I am from Pakistan and I have experienced many stereotypes about what type of person I should be like. Here in Saudi Arabia people often get surprised when they encounter a Pakistani speaking English. When I was in Canada people thought that Pakistan is a dessert and people ride camels over there, similar to the stereotype of Saudi Arabia, but the truth is Pakistan barely has any desserts. In Saudi Arabia some people were surprised that I was a Pakistani because they expect Pakistani people to be people who wash cars, do labor work or any low income job. Pakistan is not a country filled with terrorists and war 24/7. Some certain areas in Pakistan do in fact have terrorist attacks but its not something that happens repeatedly. We are not terrorists that just want to blow up everything, we are not the ones who are responsible for nine eleven. At school students think that all Pakistanis get A's and if they don't get an A then there parents give them a severe punishment. Pakistani's don't eat curry all the time, we actually have a huge variety of other foods to eat. Pakistani's don't wear turbans, its not even in our culture, that is something that some people in India wear. Stereotypes can be dangerous because we would all classify a person in a certain way and not know the beauty of other cultures around the world.
