Meeting Jade
When I first met Jade, a girl from Washington I was excited that I had made a new friend especially such a good one. At first I was afraid and a bit sceptical that she wasn’t who she said she was. However, that conflict was resolved when she sent me pictures and short videos of her over Snapchat. Quickly, the feelings I had before was replaced with excitement and I discovered that we had a lot in common. We texted back and forth for a while and had became pretty good friends. Somehow we had make the different time zones work and have talked at least once everyday.
We were on the topic of one day soon meeting face to face when she suggested that we should skype. I suddenly felt nerves start to kick in. Was she going to still like me after this? What if there was something she didn’t like about me? What if there was something that I didn’t like about her? I thought to myself. When we finally worked everything out I saw her face pop up on my screen and we both smiled at eachother, excited for this friendship to advance. I could see that she was sitting on a bed so I assumed that she was in her bedroom. I was both fearful and excited for this to be happening. I could see in her face she was feeling the same way. She told me that she was watching one of her favorite movies Grease. She watches that movie about twice a week.
We had been talking for a while, maybe an hour. Her little sister, Ashlyn (who was practically jumping off the walls) ran into the room complaining about her tea being too cold. She moved into her kitchen and started to make Ashlyn more tea when she had the idea of making banana bread. She told me her mom was a big health food person and they make everything homemade.
She started to mix the ingredients together. She mixed the dry ingredients together and started to pour the milk into a separate bowl. She went to her refrigerator to get eggs. I could see, out of the corner of the computer screen her sister started to ride through the kitchen on her tiny, pink, hard plastic scooter. It was decorated with stickers that consisted of dogs and princesses. Ashlyn ran into Jade causing her to stumble a little bit. Ashlyn, as if there wasn’t anything that was worth much of her time, rode off into another part of the house giggling. I could hear the eggs from the carton make a quiet crack noise as the shells shattered. Jade stood there with her arms half up, an open mouth, and her eyes glued to the floor.
“Oh no,” she said as I let out a laugh. I saw her swiftly drop to the floor as she exclaimed, “My mom is literally going to kill me!”.
“Oh my god,”.
“ASHLYN! COME HERE RIGHT NOW!”
“Okay!” her quiet little voice somehow traveled into the kitchen from the other room. Even though I wasn’t with her in person at that moment, I understood the pain she was in. Since I too had done that before. Once I was making cupcakes and dropped the whole tin on the mat by our kitchen sink. I spent a long time cleaning that up. She brought the camera down to show me, the contents of the yolk and shells were all over the rug they had crashed on. I felt kinda bad since she had to clean all of that up. However, that didn’t stop both her sister and me from laughing.
She gave the camera to her sister, and we both laughed as Jade raced to clean the egg out from the fabric. She had brung the rug into the laundry room and started to rinse the egg out before putting it in the wash. She had walked back into the kitchen, Ashlyn again riding about on her scooter. She had to open another egg carton since she dropped all the other ones. As she started to make the rest of the bread, we talked about a various amount of topics such as how our schools were different and how we felt about certain topics. She went up to her bedroom as the banana bread baked in the oven.
“Oh! I’ve never showed you what my room looks like,” She said walking into the doorway. She showed me her whole room. She had 3 large windows which faced the sun so she got a lot of light in her room. I was jealous of those windows. I loved them and I had one small window in my bedroom which only gets about 3 hours the morning sun.
“Jade! We have to go to Grandma Ellie’s,” Her mom said as she stood at the doorway of her bedroom. She said a quick hi to me and added “Also Jade, I took out the banana bread for you,”. It was clear, sadly that she had to leave so we had to stop skyping.
“Okay bye! I’m glad we did this it was a lot of fun!” she said with a smile on her face. I was relieved. Yay! If she said something like that she must still likes me. I thought to myself as she said gathering her things.
“Bye, text me when you get home, okay?” she nodded and ended the skype call.
This event has changed me because now I have a great friend. I have learned much more about her and I’m meeting her in face to face in May. I feel happy and I always get excited when I get texts from her or we skype because that means that I get to talk to my best friend again it fills me to the rim with joy. I also learned that, despite what everyone says and what they put in movies long distance relationships can work.
