Helen Keller found that ¨Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.¨ (Keller). I was fourteen and playing at a football game when I got my concussion. Helen was one and a half  years old when she developed Scarlet Fever, which caused her to become blind and deaf at the age of two. Much like Helen Keller overcame her obstacle of not being able to communicate, I too overcame my obstacle of a concussion.

Helen Keller had to overcome the obstacle of not being able to communicate. When Helen was a baby she developed Scarlet Fever, which left her deaf, blind, and unable to communicate. Annie Sullivan was hired by the Keller homestead to teach Helen. Annie was able to teach Helen trust, obedience, and language to overcome her obstacle.

Like Helen Keller, I also had to overcome an obstacle. The obstacle I had to overcome was a concussion. After the hit, the ambulance took me to the hospital to rest and told me steps on how I could get back to normal. It was very difficult, but with the help of the hospital and my mom, I was able to balance, regain my strength, and regain my memory.

Although our obstacles were different, we share a few similarities. Our first is determination; without determination, she would have given up on trying to learn, and I would have given up on trying to regain all the traits I had before. Trust is another because if Helen did not trust Annie, she would have never learned, and if I did not trust the nurses or my mom, then I would have never regained my strength, memory, or balance. Since we both had these qualities, we overcame our obstacles.

Like Helen Keller overcame being unable to communicate, I too overcame my concussion. I learned to never think you cannot do something from Helen’s experience. From my experience, I learned to never take the simple things for granted. Helen Keller challenged that ¨ If you keep your face to the sunshine then you cannot see a shadow.¨ (Keller)
