The Best Vacation Ever
Last summer, my family and I drove up to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina like we do every other summer for vacation. My grandpa rents a house on the beach for all of my mom’s side of the family. It felt like it took forever to get there because my family and I were so anxious to get there and have fun and relax on the beach. We finally arrived to see that everyone else was already there. It didn’t surprise me though, considering they all live a lot closer to South Carolina than we do.
After we arrived, my brother and I ripped our bathing suits out of our suitcases, put them on, and rushed out towards the water. As we were running, we noticed that the sand was scorching hot! That sand was so hot, it felt like sand from the Sahara Desert. As soon as our feet hit the water, we felt the warm refreshing sensation of the ocean. We swam out into the deeper waters only to be buried under the water by a huge wave. We were in the water for hours, until it was pitch black outside and we couldn’t see a thing. After a long day of traveling and playing in the ocean, we all went to bed, and nothing in the world could disturb any of us.
The next morning, my grandpa jumped onto my bed screaming “wake up, wake up!” He said “get your clothes on; we’re going to play golf today.” That woke me up in a hurry because I popped up out of my bed and got dressed the fastest I’ve ever gotten dressed. After we were all dressed and ready to go, we threw our clubs in the trunk and sped off towards the golf course. As we arrived at the golf course, I looked out the window to see one of the most beautiful golf courses I had ever seen! It looked like a golf course that the professionals play at on TV.
After my grandpa paid, the employee handed him the keys and we walked outside to get our cart. As we stepped outside, he handed me the keys to the golf cart. A huge smile crossed my face after he gave me the keys. We arrived at the cart, and I put the key in and started the cart. I put it in reverse and backed up the cart. While doing so, I wasn’t paying attention and almost hit these two old ladies that were walking towards the course! That gave me a charge, but I was more careful after that incident.
I hadn’t played golf in a while, so when I stepped up to the first tee, I was nervous. Golf is not like baseball where you don’t have to play every day to keep up your mechanics. Golf is a hard sport and if you haven’t practiced or played in a long time, it could be a long day for you. But, I hit my first drive right down the middle of the fairway. That calmed my nerves down tremendously after hitting the first shot of the day perfectly. I played well for the rest of the day, until my dad said that I was beating him by one stroke going to the last hole. This worried me because my dad is a really good golfer and he’s been playing for 20 years compared to my 7 or 8. He definitely got in my head because I pulled my drive way left into a pond. I ended up double bogeying the hole and losing to him by one stroke!
On the way home, I was very disappointed because I was beating everyone until the final home. But, the goal was just to have fun and spend time with my family. When we arrived back at the beach house, we again put our bathing suits on and rushed out to the ocean. The choppy water that day made it a perfect day to use our huge 8-person raft to play in. We weren’t out there five minutes before one of the biggest waves I had ever seen crashed down on us. It flipped us and the whole raft over! After we came back above water, it took us a minute to think about what had just happened. We all swam back to the raft hoping that an even bigger wave was on the horizon. But sadly, our hopes would not come true because for the rest of the day, the waters were very calm.
After about six hours of playing in the ocean, our grandma called from the deck “we’re going to dinner in an hour!” As soon as we heard her, we all rushed out of the water and sprinted up to the house to dry off, take showers, and get ready for dinner. We arrived at a fairly new looking restaurant. I knew I wasn’t going to like it from the name of it. “Flounder’s” said it all; the restaurant was going to be seafood. I don’t like seafood at all. The rest of my family does but I just don’t like it.
The highlight of the dinner was when it was finally over. After it was over, we went to get ice cream. This made me a lot happier considering I hadn’t eaten anything for dinner. And my grandpa had one more surprise for us that day when he said “okay who’s ready to go miniature golfing?”I perked up as soon as he said that because I love miniature golfing! My grandpa and my dad took all of my cousins and I to miniature golfing course. I was really excited because I would get to hang out with my family, and possibly avenge my earlier loss at real golf.
We arrived at the course and rushed into the shop. After my grandpa paid we all rushed out to the course. On the first hole I got a hole-in-one, which was a positive sign for things to come. But I didn’t get another hole in one until the final hole. But, that proved to be the difference because I beat my brother, dad, and grandpa all by one stroke! This was a huge bounce-back win after earlier. But, after another long day we all went back to the beach house and went to bed.
The next day, we didn’t go play golf so we could spend more time with my cousins because they didn’t play golf. We ended up hanging out at the beach all day, but with some consequences. My skin was the most red I had ever seen it, even after tons of sunscreen. But it couldn’t keep the sun’s rays from burning my pale skin. On the bright side, the next few days went like the first two, except for the winner at golf. I won once, my grandpa won twice, my dad one once, and my brother didn’t win at all (haha).
On our final day at the beach, my whole family spent it playing either beach volleyball or playing in the warm ocean. As the sun went down, it began to sink in that this was our last night, and that we all had to go back to our normal, hardworking lives.
The drive home felt even longer than the drive up because we were all so disappointed that our vacation was already over. It had gone by so fast. Now we all had to go back to work (my parents) and my brother and I had to watch our little sister all summer (boring). But we had a blast and I was glad we were able to go. It was very fun while it lasted.
