the dog
The day started out normally, i was just a little 5th grader enjoying my Saturday afternoon helping my mom get ready for her derby party, which I looked forward to every year. It was tomorrow so I had a bunch of work to do, such as help get and set up chairs and get tables and coolers from my neighbors.
I was setting out chairs when my neighbor from across the street came over and said she needed help carrying stuff over to our house for the party, and of course my mom told me to go help her. At first I didn’t want to go, I just wanted to stay home and watch TV, after all I had worked all day. Then my neighbor spoke up.
“I found a friendly stray dog” she said “I’m pretty sure he will be fine with you petting and playing with him.”
I got really excited when I heard that, I love dogs so much and whenever I get the chance I pet and play with them.
“Where did u find him?” I asked.
“I found him running up and down the street” she said “he ran right up next to me and I grabbed him so a car wouldn’t hit him.”
“Oh cool!” I said “mom I’m going over to help!” I yelled to my mom.
“Ok”, she said, “be careful.”
“I will” I said back.”
I immediately ran over there to help, and when I reached the gate I saw the dog. It was a small, brown, pit. He was full of energy, and very friendly, he came up right next to me and jumped on my leg trying to get me to pet him.
But I had stuff to do so I couldn’t stay long, so I ran into the garage and grabbed the cooler. My neighbor didn’t want the dog to get out, so she told me just to hope the fence. I thought that the dog didn’t seem to be protective so he wouldn’t do anything if I hoped the fence, but I was completely wrong. Right as I was about to hop over the fence the dog jumped up and bit the back of my leg! I fell to the ground, crying as my neighbor rushed over. She grabbed the dog and put him in her house to keep him away from me, and came back out with a medical kit. She temporarily stopped the bleeding and she took me home. Right when I got home my mom saw me crying and immediately asked what happened and my neighbor explained as my dad rushed home from work. He came by my mom’s house to pick me up and take me to the hospital.
At the hospital I found out how bad the bite really was, the bite was pretty deep and it ended up being a pretty bad scar. I didn’t need stitches but I did need to have shots for rabies and other stuff that the dog might have had. Luckily the dog had been well taken care of before my neighbor found him and the tests came back negative
We later found out that the owners had picked up the dog from the police station, and had taken him home. We ended up trying to get them to pay the hospital bill but they refused. They ended up moving and they never told anyone their new address so we couldn’t find them, and we never found out what happened to the dog.
