A Bump in the Road

The accident happened so fast it was hard to tell if it was real or not…….

It was about five o’ clock on a Saturday evening. We were on our way to Chuck E’ Cheese. My grandpa was driving and the passengers were me, my grandma, brother and little five month old cousin. I was only five years old at the time and my parents were out of town on a cruise. My brother and I were staying with my grandparents while my parents were gone.

We were over half way there when the car had pulled out. It didn’t stop at a stop sign and just pulled out right into traffic, right into us. It was a huge car and I remember just seeing a huge wall of black in front of us. My grandpa tried slamming on the brakes, but he was, unfortunately, not fast enough. We ran straight into the side of the other car. I don’t really remember the instant impact only right after it had happened. It was all over so suddenly.

At first, nobody moved and all you could here was the traffic passing by. All of us in the car were in complete shock. For about two minutes we just sat there in the car until my grandpa got out of the car to talk to the other driver. I could here the ambulance making there way to us. My brother and I didn’t cry. I couldn’t cry because I was so freaked out at what just happened. My little cousin didn’t make any noise either; she was still fast asleep in her car seat.

My grandma was still in the front seat, not moving. That’s when I saw it. There were bones sticking out of my grandma’s arm in a very unnatural way. It was so disturbing and frightening. Her arm looked deformed. I sat in the car for about another five minutes staring at my grandma until someone finally pulled me out. I was then put into an ambulance to see if I was okay. While in the ambulance I could see the paramedics getting my grandma out of the car and into a helicopter. That’s when I started to cry. I was so scared and worried about my grandma. I just wanted to go home and forget about the whole thing.
The paramedics were trying to calm me down from my hysteria to get a good look at me. I had a huge bump on my forehead from hitting my head on the back of my grandpa’s chair. The bump was pretty big and was turning colors that did not match my skin tone. The paramedics decided to take me to the hospital along with my grandpa, brother and cousin. They were all okay and only walked off with a couple of scratches on their arms. On the other hand my grandma had to be taken to a big hospital to have surgery immediately on her arm.

Once we got to the hospital they put me into a room and had doctors check out my head. We were there for about four hours. All I really remember about the hospital is watching The Little Mermaid on the television in the room. The doctors said I would be fine and to just keep an eye on me in case something bad happened. We went home after that with my grandma still in the hospital.
The next couple of days were a blur. I went to school and kids in my class would stare and ask questions on why there was this bump on my head and why I looked like a raccoon. The reason was that blood from the bump on my head drained to underneath my eyes. I looked pretty scary and all of the kids in my class would look at me like I was an alien or a foreign species.

Once my parents got home I felt so much better. I felt safer and more assured that everyone and everything was going to be okay. My grandma finally got released from the hospital with a cast on her arm, but she was going to be okay. The one thing that did happen though after the accident is that my brother and I never wanted to go Chuck E’ Cheese ever again!
