Let's Chill
Winter, what’s the point? Six months of freezing cold weather and hard times of getting around. Winter has it’s ups and it’s downs. From the ski slopes to slogging your way through the snow banks, it’s just one person’s opinion.
Well, in my opinion, the winter season is good and bad. When I look out my window in the morning during the midst of the snowy year I think, “Wow, it’s so pretty outside with all the snow. I feel so lucky to live in Colorado!” It’s true. I think seeing the snow on the ground and grazing the mountain tops is very pretty. So fluffy looking, the mountains bring the true meaning to Colorado. That’s the one condition with living in Colorado, and living in the mountains. There isn’t always sunny seasons and rainy seasons everywhere else. No. Colorado, instead of rain during the winter, other places in the world, the temperatures get cold enough to bring us a whispy white blanket that spreads across the entire Roaring Fork Valley. It’s fun to see and fun to play, ski and snowboard in. But not always the most fun to walk in...
The one disappointing element to winter in the Valley is walking around in the snow. For six months, I deal with my shoes getting soaking wet along with my jeans when the snow is so deep. The sun also sets by five o’ clock now! 5:30, 6:00 at night so the nights are long and boring. Its endless and annoying.
When winter storms come, they can be beautiful and deadly. The blizzards, freezing rain, sleet, or freezing temperatures and wind make driving difficult and people’s lives to threat and danger. A bad car accident, slipping on ice for a bad injury, these are the reasons why winter can be the most dangerous time of the year.
I wish it would stay warm and sunny like spring and summer, but I can’t control the weather. The freezing cold house, the endless bitter cold. It all comes with the stormy, snowy days that once they start, they never seem to go away. But the thrill of the next ski season, being able to cozy up by the fire with a good book, the joys of winter days. It’s all in the way of getting used to those cold, hard to get up days when we have to go to school.
No one likes it, well, some people do. Even though we live in Colorado, most of us are ski bums, some of us don’t like the snow at all. Such choices. Being more half and half, it’s day to day for me. There are days when I wake up and I’m thankful, there are days when I wish I didn’t live here. Winter seems like the hardest time of the year for me, getting around to places seems so challenging. Its so hard with the icy roads and walking everywhere takes so much time. It’s time consuming, and I have better things to do. In the bitter cold, who really would want to stand outside?
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand, and for talk beside the fire: it’s time for home. It’s not time for the outside.
