She admired him in all the classes she had with him, but he never noticed her. Even though she always tried to be the best, most attractive version of herself, she knew it wouldn’t ever be enough. Her name was Jay; and his, Damon. While both of them were highschoolers, she was a freshman and he a junior. So, she tried, to no avail, to shadow him, be with him whenever she had the chance to. They exchanged numbers, but it still wasn’t enough for her. He never showed an interest like she did.

She was annoying as hell.

Damon didn’t know why this freshmen followed him around everywhere. At first. But over a short span of time, he caught on. So this is why you’ll never leave me alone, you’re head over heels. But it’s not normal for someone my age to be with her. Too young. She wouldn’t be able to handle all the bull I’ve been through, 17 years of making enemies and hurting people along the way.

She realized he would push her away, but she was nothing if not persistent. Jay wouldn’t give up that easily.

Damon was brutal. He bullied her for a while, but when that didn’t work he just didn’t talk to her. That seemed to make her work harder, but Damon couldn’t figure out why. Why him.

Jay was beginning to lose hope. She just pushed too hard, so hard she would push her love out of the picture.

She bombarded him with texts one night. Except when he responded, she was surprised to find out he wasn’t sober. She wanted to take the opportunity to hang out with him, so the two snuck out and met up in the dead of night.

Jay got what she wanted, an entire night when they could be alone, where they could do whatever they wanted. But Damon was a little too over the edge. She was scared, but she let it happen.

So Jay got laid.

Damon got sober.

They fought.

Jay provoked him for no reason, if not just to talk.

Damon grew more distant with her.

Or maybe she was overreacting to the situation. So after a few months, he broke off whatever was still brewing inside of her. Because it didn’t matter to him like it mattered to her, that night.

“I don’t love you. I never did. I thought about it, really I did, but I can’t. My heart died with the one I loved.”

Oh, Jay thought.

Jay was nothing the next morning. Damon didn’t know and didn’t care.

But worse things have happened.

Our names aren't real, but it almost felt like our love was.
