Everything has to follow the law of jungle. This is an unchanging truth.

Because of my love for dogs, I have traveled through countless dog markets in China with my camera in the past few years. These places are dirty, foul-smelling, noisy, and disgusting. I believe that if it were not for trading, no one would be willing to come here. However, there are many interesting, weird, and unbelievable phenomena hidden in this chaos. These phenomena deeply attracted me and prompted me to press the shutter again and again.

Just like every Disney Land has Daily Parade which attracts people to stop and watch, every dog market has its own daily activity – “Dogfight”. In the open space in the center of the dog, there is an arena dedicated to dogs. On this field, the warrior of this arena, the dog, will start a fierce battle here, and the result can only be "to be or not to be". As a person born in a peaceful age, this is the most disgusting, violent, bloody, and cruel competition I have ever seen. In China, dogs are generally regarded as tame wolves – they are obedient, docile, and loyal. But at this moment, they became real wolves again, but more ferocious. They used their mouths to madly attack the most vulnerable part of the enemy, while at the same time dexterously avoiding the opponent's bite. The screams of despair and the roars of victory were endless, and the blood was spilled all over the while field.

After the game, the dying loser would be transported away, maybe killed, or maybe even eaten. And the owner of the winner would receive warm applause. As one of the crowds, I used the shutter to record the "wonderful" moment one after another. But when I turned my camera towards the crowd, all I saw was ignorance. Everyone was standing there without any expression. Their eyes were hollow, like a long tunnel whose end is unable to see, just like watching a boring comedy.

I’ve talked to a lot of dog owners who let their dogs join this competition. I have learned that just like any other competition, every dog has a sponsor, which can be a person who enjoys this competition or some pet store that needs to earn some reputation from this. Gambling is going on all the time, and some people even lose all of their fortunes.

The scenes of those fighting could never be effaced from my mind, but what is more impressive are those black eyes from the crowd.
