The Red Bucket
¨Max, do you know where to get extra napkins? I need to clean up the mess you made!¨ I exclaimed to my little brother.
¨Yeah, I do know where you can find extra napkins to clean up your mess. It is either in the dishwasher, the toilet, or the sink. Or maybe it's in that red bucket over there! Let me know when you find out!¨ Max rudely responded.
¨My mess? You threw my spaghetti on the ground!¨ Astrid argued.
¨Stop worrying about the mess. Go get the napkins, Astrid. We did not travel to Cancun in the middle of July for you two to argue!¨ Liliana ordered.
¨Fine!¨ I said. Everywhere around me was crowded. The people were eating and drinking while I was stuck looking for napkins. I even tried looking in the red bucket, but it was just full of money.
¨No señorita, not there. That's the tips they have earned today,¨ The waiter explained, pointing to the band on the left.
¨Do you know where the napkins are?¨ I asked. She handed me the napkins, and I made my way to our table.
¨Instead of bickering with Astrid, maybe you should try to enjoy the mariachi band playing for us today!¨ Louis suggested.
¨Whatever. It's way better than listening to her anyway!¨ Max responded.
¨You think my voice is annoying? Try listening to this!¨ I chewed my food very loudly until I got distracted by the music coming from the band.
The mariachi band noticed the eyes of my family watching over their every move, and they walked over to our table. Their music was the equivalent of pools of dull blue ink, devouring all forms of light in their intensity. It was nebulous enough to reflect the depths of the underworld so that dark celestial bodies in the rhythm of their music reside in undulating clouds of volcanic ash.
¨Paga más, tocamos más música!” The mariachi band declared.
I was going to respond, but my family just nodded and clapped their hands. Our waiter giggled.
¨More music! More music!¨ Max begged.
For some reason, as they continued playing, an impatient look smeared their faces. I gave one of them a smile; however, I got a frown in return. I grasp my confusion and anger and hold it in my chest.
¨Bravo!¨ Louis applauded.
My mother and father glued their eyes to their phones as the band continued to play. After a while, the band players opened their hands and held them out to us. The waiter snorted.
¨Paga más, tocamos más música!” The mariachi band declared again.
Max gave them a high five. The mariachi band again held their hands, closer to my mother's face. Our waiter giggled again.
¨Do you have any idea why they behave in such a manner?¨ asked Liliana. The waiter's face contorted into a goofy smile. Trying to hold back her internal laughter, she continued to not look into the eyes of her customers.
¨Oh, I don't know. They do this all the time!¨ The waiter answered.
¨It is getting too loud. We cannot eat our lunch like this. Tell them to leave!¨ Liliana ordered.
¨Will you tell them to find another table?¨ Louis asked the waiter.
They moved to another table, but they kept eyeing us and giving us dirty looks. Soon, they came back. Our waiter tried to make them leave, but they would not budge.
¨PAGA MÁS, TOCAMOS MÁS MÚSICA!!!” The mariachi band shouted.
My father and mother were surprised. The waiter decided to kick them out. I have no idea what was going on in their minds. I'm scared, but I know I have to figure out what we could have done to make them this upset. I quickly get up from my chair and run to the waiter.
¨Oh, I don't think they'll talk. Don´t you see how upset they are?¨ The waiter giggled.
¨I need to find out why. I am determined! They played so beautifully for us; I want to let them know we are sorry if we have upset them!¨ I pleaded. The waiter went outside and talked with them. Then, she came in holding the red bucket filled with the money I saw earlier.
¨Tips! Everyone gives tips!¨ The waiter exclaimed.
¨That is why they were holding their hands out! This is all Max´s fault. I thought they were trying to give us high fives!¨ I responded.
My parents threw a decent amount of money into the red bucket, and we apologize for upsetting them.
Liliana laughed while tilting her head backward.
¨Liliana, this is not funny! We´ve stressed those poor men out!¨ Louis said while taking a step forward towards the red bucket.
¨They told us not to stress about it all. Besides, we had no idea they were asking for money!¨ Liliana responded.
¨I swear that thing is mocking me!¨ Louis firmly stated while staring fiercely at the red bucket. The family and the waiter stumbled out of the restaurant as their laughter tackled the air.
¨You are one determined child!¨ The waiter said while giggling. The sky laughed with her, releasing droplets of rain that lingered on her eyelashes.
¨Yeah, she is determined to make a mess everywhere!¨ Max claimed.
¨Oh, don´t start. I might have to push you into that red bucket!¨ I warned.
