“Okay, you guys head out to number three. You will start off there. It is a par 3. I will expect to see you guys back here in four or so hours ” David said.

“Got it.” My group screams over the background voices.

We arrive at the third tee and the others in my group begin to say the order of play. I decide to go last to see how the others are, and suddenly realize that my group consists of college recruits. Son comes my turn, and I  step to the tee. For some reason, I get begin to get nervous about what they will think of me after I hit. It does not matter anymore because I can not drop out of the tournament. So, I just swung, and my ball landed ten feet away from the hole.

“What a swing.” Jack spoke.

After about two hours, I realize that we are flying through holes. We soon arrive at hole number nine and I have eight straight pars. I was hoping to par or birdie this hole to boost my confidence going into the back nine, my shot flew passed the flag and I end up three putting the hole for a bogey. I was disappointed, but I was still playing great.

About and hour and a forty-five minutes later, we get to the eighteenth hole. My drive floats down the center of the fairway, and I thought to myself this was a perfect setup to end my round on a good score. If I got a five on this hole I would break eighty. It would be a dream come true to break eighty and be able to write that on my scorecard. All I had to do is to choose which shot I should go for. I could have either lay up and get an up and down, but maybe miss my putt or shank my chip shot, or take the bigger risk of going for the green now and then having two chances to putt it. What should I do? I soon realize there there is a creek directly in front the green. If I were to hit my ball the slightest bit off, everything, all 4 hours of the round would have been blown. Instead of thinking pessimistically, I started to think optimistically. Now, what if I do get it there. I have achieved one of my goals that I have been setting for about a year in the future.

I decided I was going to decide to take the risk even though this could ruin my whole round. Before I hit my ball, I pictured myself hitting it onto the green, and then took my stance at the ball soon after. I lined up, took a look at my target, and began to shake so I stepped back from the ball looked down at my watch. Two hundred yards. I told myself I could do it, and I took my stance again and hit it.

“C’mon, get there.” I whispered.

Plop. My ball not only made it there, but rolled to 10 feet away.

I let the others go and they finish up their putts before they got to mine. I read my putt, lined it up and then went to hit it. I knew I could do it, and  I had two chances, so I hit it and it rolled around the cup. Following, I tapped that one in for a birdie, and took off my hat to shake hand with the others. I could not believe that I did it. We signed eachothers cards to make it official, and then headed back for the clubhouse.

“What is your handicap.” I said to Jack
         “Scratch, what about you.”
         “Thirteen”
“No way.” He screeched “You beat all of us, and you are a thirteen. I thought you were scratch also.”
         “Thanks.” I laughed.
“Well keep playing. You can get to be really good.” He said
         “You too.”

We soon went up to eat with our golf teams. This was the best day I had had in years.
