“Once a King, always a King”, is what Spanky, a Latin King member, said to Reymundo Sanchez as he was walking away from the Latin King Nation. Reymundo Sanchez known to the Almighty Latin King Nation as Lil Loco was one of the most respected members in the gang until he decided to leave that lifestyle. Even with all the money, sex, drugs, and power he was getting for being a member of the Kings he still felt he should leave that lifestyle to do better for himself. Lil Loco had a horrendous childhood. In his teens he joined the Almighty Latin Kings Nation but he has been hanging around gangbangers since he was a little kid. This book takes place in the 90’s in the Humboldt Park area in Chicago. The story is mainly about how Reymundo went from being a hardcore gangbanger to trying to change his ways and lifestyle; from him finding love to him doing drugs again to him getting attacking by his own gang.

This book is honest, shocking, and it really happened. Reymundo went through so many things as a member of the Latin Kings and throughout his life, but to get through all that he had to be strong, even though he kept all his anger in him. Reymundo writes about his days as a Latin King gangbanger and how he tries to change his lifestyle when he gets out of prison. He is so honest in how he feels and isn’t scared to tell the reader he really was scared. When he gets out of prison, he finds a beautiful lady by the name of Marilyn, she is a successful woman who graduated from college and has her life together. Reymundo and Marilyn get together and decide to move in together in Chicago. Afterwards, they end up moving to Dallas together but Reymundo ends up messing everything up by letting his anger control him. I really like this book but I feel like this book isn’t for everyone because not everyone would like to read about murder, sex, and drugs.
I really like this book but I feel like this book isn’t for everyone because not everyone would like to read about murder, sex, and drugs. Once A King, Always A King - The Unmaking Of A Latin King by Reymundo Sanchez is by far one of the best books I have read. It’s also the sequel of My Bloody Life - The Making Of A Latin King by Reymundo Sanchez, which happens to be my favorite book. The book doesn’t get that boring because his narrative engages the reader. He is always doing something like selling drugs, finding love, or getting locked up. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars because at the end I started to lose interest in the book. The book really got me thinking of life and got me reflecting on the choices I make. I felt like he had his reasons why he did what he did and I wouldn’t blame him for what he did. Sometimes, as I was reading this book, I wouldn’t want to stop reading it because I would be so wrapped up in the book. I felt it was a different experience to read a book that I liked and not a book I was forced to read, one that I had no interest in.
