The Norse meaning of Eric “eternal ruler, island ruler, famous bearer.” The Scandinavian meaning “ever kingly.” Like the cold winds of winter, this name comes from the land of vikings. It has been held by kings and explorers long ago.

People with this name have a deep burning desire to adventure. To not be governed by tradition. To be a traveler without a map. To be an explorer on a never ending journey. To be free.

Its fame originated from the mighty 10th century viking explorer Eric the Red. It is believed that he and his son Lief Erickson were the first European explorers to discover the country Greenland and to later discover other parts of North America.

My parents really had no inspiration or specific reason to name me Eric. They just said when I was young I looked like an Eric. Still haven’t figured out if thats a good or bad thing but as I get older, it's hard to see myself being named anything else.

To me my name is simple and boring. When you hear the name Eric, you don't imagine a large bearded viking explorer covered in animal pelts. You think of a normal scrawny nerd or just a normal boring guy.

The meaning of my name “King” or “Ruler” does not fit me well. I'm obviously no king and I don’t want to be. However, the quality that goes along with the name, being adventurous, fits pretty well. Like my ancient viking counterpart, I have a natural desire to explore and be free. I'd rather be outside in an icy blizzard near a scorching fire than be inside bored and comfy.

If I was forced to change my name I would probably change it to something like Steven. Steve is just a pretty cool name. When you hear the name Steve, you automatically think that person is cool. Like Steve Harrington from Stranger Things. But in the end, im happy with the name Eric. Its my name and it’s who I am.
