Characters in books often resemble real life people. In The Hunger Games Trilogy, Katniss Everdeen is a strong, brave, and fair young woman. At the age of twelve, her father dies in a coal mining accident and her mother becomes severely depressed. Because of the death of her father and her mother’s depression, Katniss is forced to look after of her younger sister, Prim. At the age of sixteen Katniss volunteer’s as tribute after her sister Prim was chosen to go into the Hunger Games arena to fight to the death along with 23 other tributes between the ages of 12 and 18. Katniss over comes the Hunger Games with her district partner, Peeta Mellark, but her troubles aren’t over yet, this is just the beginning. Just like Katniss, people in the real world face hardships and overcome those hardships making strong men and women.

When Katniss was twelve her father died while working in a coal mine. Due to her father’s death her mother becomes severely depressed and is unable to take care of Katniss or Katniss’ younger sister Prim. In this way Katniss reminds me of my mother and her older sisters. My mother’s father was an alcoholic and never gave money to his family even though he had plenty of money to live a comfortable life with his family. So my mother’s sisters had to work night and day to take care of their mother who is my grandmother and to send my mother to high school and college. With the help of my mother’s sisters she was able to get a college degree.

Katniss portrays herself as a non-caring and unmerciful girl she is actually a fair and caring young lady. When Katniss comes out of the Hunger Games as a victor she takes care of her mentor, Haymitch, who helped her survive the bloody arena and she knows that without Haymitch she wouldn’t have been able to come home alive. My cousin, Virginia, often resemble these characteristics of Katniss. My cousin is known to be straight forward and speaks her mind as freely as a bird flies in the blue skies, but Virginia is also a fair person who forgives those who have done her wrong.

In the country of Panem where Katniss lives its citizens of the 12 districts loathe the day of reaping. It is the day where a boy and girl are chosen from each district to go in the Hunger Games and fight to the death. On the 74th Hunger Games Katniss’ younger sister Prim is chosen at random to go into the arena Katniss refuse to let her sister die in the arena so she volunteers to take her place as tribute. This reminds me of the U.S. military many brave men and women sacrifice their lives so that we may live a happy and free life. These me and women will fight to the death to protect this great nation. Just like Katniss will fight to her death to protect her younger sister Prim.

Sometimes people don’t understand how important these characteristics are until they are brought to life in literature. To be able to sacrifice, and to be strong, caring, and fair is something that every man or woman should strive to be. Individuals can learn a lot from the pages of an essay to novel that characters of a story often resemble the heroes of our lives.
