Kiro and AI
“Hey Xuheng, can you believe? I may have a chance to meet my mother again! RIGHT NOW!” Kiro was excited,
“Well……. I will believe you 'cause you are my best friend, but be honest…….. how?” I was confused, Kiro’s mom passed away 10 years ago, and I didn’t understand how it was possible. And that was how our story began.
I was an Internet person, and most of my time was spent on the Internet. The Internet is fun, it connects people across the world. People communicate across different races and cultures but with the same hobbit or interest. For this reason, I always catch the news from each area, especially on technology, I am a big fan of machines and robots. I love everything about robots, the shape, the input, the hardware, the purpose. I watch almost every single source, movie, anime, or game that is related to robots and machines, so I was a shark when the ChatGPT.
To be honest, when I first heard about ChatGPT, I was impressed that ChatGPT is just an AI program that can answer all the questions you ask. Research AI like it already came out in the past time, but no one survived, and surprised me. But ChatGPT is different, compared to its senior Apple Siri, Siri also can react to what you ask, but it just gives a brief Google research result and you have to find the one that fits your question by yourself But ChatGPT is different, it will directly give you an answer instead a google result.
Compared to Siri, it helps you omit the hassle of picking the answer it fits. ChatGPT will pick the best answer by data, and directly “tell” you without transfer to the website. The first time I saw it, I immediately knew that it would surprise the world. ChatGPT will serve as the basis for many software, which means that many future software can interact with people. Imagine that future mobile phones can have conversations with you.
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the creation and use of algorithms to build a dynamic computing environment to simulate the basis of human intelligence processes. The goal of artificial intelligence efforts is to make computers think and act like humans.
"AI will definitely not be realized in a short time," I said, "think about it, people haven't even figured out how the human brain works yet, so how is it possible to create a brain?"
"Well", Kiro startled for a moment, "But if you think about it, people may also figure out how the human brain works by building AI brains. Or like the Turing Test, AI may already exist, we just don't know it."
The idea of AI mostly began with the Turing Test, also known as the imitation game by Alan Turing in 1950, he created an idea that if a machine and humans talking on the phone, and if the human doesn't realize the person they are talking with was a machine, which means the machine past the test as an AI because that they have human symbols and people can't tell them apart.
Kiro is the child in the corner of the classroom. After losing her mother in childhood, she became withdrawn and unwilling to communicate with others. She believed that she would only bring bad luck to those close to her. And I was the first person who was willing to contact her even after being rejected by her. Over time, I became her only and best friend.
“she is still alive in my mind. With her red dress and clean blue eyes, I still remember her. I still remember the first time we met. I was crushed by her as the eyes saw her. The meal she cooked was nice, the spicy of peppery, the smell of the steak she made for me.” Kiro lost her mother forever when she was 6, her mother passed the world by protecting her from a car accident. “But now it’s possible to resurrect her with AI technology!”
Kiro was waiting for this moment for a very long, unimaginably long time.
“But be honest, are people “resurrected” by AI can be considered as real people?” I continue, “They just collect the data of your mother, like the way she speaks, the voice of her, I don’t think it’s a real person although. It’s just a person that most like your mother, but not the real one, but be honest, if you really think so, then I'm okay with it.”
“Thank you, Heng, you are absolutely my best friend, and you have always been the one who understands me best.” Kiro was very pleased, “I just mish my mom too much, although I understand what you're saying, I'm really looking forward to seeing my mom again, whether it's true or not”
It was during winter, just after Christmas right before, the sky was still snowing, white, shining snowflakes falling down. We celebrated Christmas by at-home BBQ, only me and Kiro. Friends were busy, and we both liked to stay with each other. My parent still out of the nation, enjoying their vacation. So that year of Christmas, we made a home BBQ, only me and her, we put the grill in the center of the living room, took the whole box of soda and other drinks from the refrigerator, also the meat we bought: Breafs, chickens, lambs, porks, some of them are steaks, some of them are string, a lot of seaweed, Kiro like seaweed. We both seat on the sofa and enjoyed our Christmas dinner, outside was quiet, just like the world only got us. A few snowflakes drifted through the air and flew into our house, glittering under the lights, when the snowflake was illuminated, the sky also turned bright, it blinded my eyes.
"Yah, Heng, Morning, looks like you got a good sleep last night, you must expect that BBQ for a long time right."
I stayed with her for a long time, helping her find and collect her mother’s information, photos, voices, and even phone records. And send it to an organization that was willing to help us resurrect her mother. After receiving the package that took us a year, Kiro cried. She had been waiting for this day for 11 years, and now when she saw her mother's voice and appearance again, she cried with joy and emotion. With the help of ChatGPT, her mother was able to have a conversation with Kiro and comfort not to be troubled by the past.
“I am always by your side, Kiro, whatever you do, I will always support you.” That was the only word I remember the most.
The time between when the phrase “artificial intelligence” was created, and the 1980s was a period of both rapid growth and struggle for AI research. The late 1950s through the 1960s was a time of creation. From programming languages that are still in use to this day to books and films that explore the idea of robots, AI became a mainstream idea quickly.
“Have you heard about what happened in previous day?” Kiro said, “The world is gonna change, ChatGPT can answer you whatever you ask, even some personal stuff!”
“But be honest, I don’t really think that it can change and turn the world up and down,” I drank a bit of water and said. “It is useful, but at most it is just a tool that can answer your question while you don’t have to research by yourself, just another Google, but automated answer what you ask.”
I continue, “Things like it appeared already, but no none of it survived till now”,
“Yeah, you may be right, maybe I just think too much”
This was our view when ChatGPT was born, and we don’t think the world will change as a result. But we were wrong. In the future, the entire society will be changed by ChatGPT, becoming more convenient and more dangerous.
Way back in 2017, at a conference in Lisbon, physicist Stephen Hawking warned the world about the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI). While he talked about the potential of AI in solving world problems, he admitted that the future was uncertain. He said, “We cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI, or ignored by it and side-lined, or conceivably destroyed by it.” He stressed on the need to be aware of the risks and employ best practices and effective management so that society could be prepared for all consequences.
ChatGPT's powerful search capabilities and its simple use have become popular. For example, with the AI drawing derived from ChatGPT, many companies began to use AI manufacturing to replace humans, and many people were been fired. Compared with humans, AI does not need rest or wages. It can keep running as long as there is electricity to maintain its work. While AI is expected to increase efficiency and save time, the loss of jobs will have a huge impact on the social fabric.
“Yah….Heng, what do you think about the current society? AI has begun to replace people’s jobs and people have lost their jobs. Do you think we will also be replaced by AI and disappear from society?” Kiro is worried about our future.
“What you said is very right, and I agree with it very much, but to be honest, we are still only high school students, and there is still a long way to go in the future, at least 4 years of college to spend,” I explain. “Entering society is still quite far away for us. It is possible that by that time AI will have completely replaced people at work, and we will be able to enjoy a life of vacation every day. Or perhaps AI will be restricted by new laws in the future, and humans may still be the main force in social work. Everything is possible, and we are just small fish following the huge waves”
Indeed, the fear that smart machines might replace human workers has been rife for years. It has become a reality to some extent in industries that depend on repetitive work. Loss of work could lead to many unwanted situations, besides economic loss. There are growing fears that data could be abused, humans could lose control over data, socio-economic balance could be at risk, and new kinds of crimes could emerge. Despite the doomsday scenarios predicted, experts agree that AI can help solve many global challenges. Global leaders must come together and set up checks and balances such that AI cannot create any malicious upheavals.
