"The Road Not Taken" Poem Response
Sometimes things have deeper meanings than they first appear. “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is a beautiful poem written in an elegant style about a traveler who had to pick between two roads… I think though, that it’s deeper meaning is that in our many paths of life, every path we take or choice we make will lead us on to another path. Sometimes we may not know which path to take, but every path makes a difference, impacting our life and others’ lives.
The first four lines of the poem suggest that there are different roads and the traveler doesn’t know which one to take. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could.” The traveler stood looking down each road as far as he could because he couldn’t decide which road to take and their appearance impacted his decision because whether or not he liked the appearance would affect his choice.
After choosing his road, knowingly he writes, “Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.” This suggests the thought that his chosen path will take him somewhere else leading on to another path of life and soon the path he left behind will be only history, for him never to return.
The last three lines in the poem read, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” Explaining how the road the writer chose changed his future choices, and where he went in life.
There are many paths through life and sometimes we don’t know which path to choose, but every path or choice we make, no matter how big or small will make “all the difference”.
