Children in the United States watch an average of three to four hours of television a day. By the time of high school graduation, they will have spent more time watching television than they have in the classroom (Children). While television can entertain, inform and keep our children company, it influences them in undesirable ways. Time spent watching TV takes away from important activities such as reading, schoolwork, playing, exercising and social development. Watching television and doing homework at the same time is a negative effect on kids.

Therefore, children who watch a lot of television are likely to do poorly in school. Kids who watch a lot of TV have trouble paying attention to teachers because they are accustomed to the fast-paced visual stimulation on TV (Good). For many students, homework must compete with television for their attention. If students spend a lot of time watching television, little time is left to focus on academic studies. Kids watching cartoons and entertainment television during pre-school years have poorer pre reading skills at age 5(Raise). Kids, who watch TV and attempt to do their homework at the same time, will cause them to break the rules in general. Weather your breaking rules inside or outside of school. It will make them careless people. The bad news is that, the majority of experts think that a TV/video-driven culture has bad effects on kids and may prevent kids from being smart. TV numbs kids mind as it prevents them from thinking analytically especially while doing an assignment. Television takes away time from reading and improving through practice.

In addition, kids watch more than two hours of TV each day that means they have a higher chance of being obese when they grow up. Usually when kids watch TV and study, they tend to eat a lot. Kids often snack on their junk food while watching TV. Kids who watch too much TV are usually overweight, according to the American Medical Association (Raise2). Kids are influenced by commercials to consume unhealthy food. People may be full but not realize it, or they might unconsciously eat more when they see a commercial for something that looks appetizing. Also, they are not running, jumping or doing activities that burn calories and increase metabolism. Obese kids, unless they change their habits, tend to be obese when they become adults (Good2).Kids whom are ashamed of themselves, and are quiet in school makes them feel like they’re not wanted. That’s why kids don’t care whether their homework is right or wrong, they only care if it’s complete. Not trying on homework will put kids in bad positions. Kids should do their homework on a desk, without any distractions.

However, children who watch a lot of television while doing homework are likely to have less family interaction time. Active parenting can ensure that children have a positive experience with television; parents can help by turning off the TV during family meals and study times (Children2).Study times are for learning, not sitting in front of the TV doing homework. Meal times are a good time for family members to talk to each other, not for watching television. Students, who don’t make spare time doing homework, usually have a bad attitude against their parents. Some kids think their “bad” that they doing their homework. As, a result, television also exposes children to behaviors and attitudes that may be overwhelming and difficult to understand. Seeing violent behavior on TV or through other forms of media can also make teens act more violently. Kids who view violent shows are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them
(Distractions). Kids shouldn’t get any distractions when doing homework. Homework is a form of practice or self-directed study, which improves student’s achievements.

Furthermore, TV viewing is a major activity and influence on children and adolescents. Children learn inappropriate information from television shows. However, statistics concerning the average number of hours spent on homework tell us little about the quality of the homework assigned or the effort and care students take in completing it (Tv2). It is important for children to play, read, do homework without distraction, and have in person conversations with other children and adults. The percentage of students indicating they do 2 or more hours of homework daily was generally lower in the US states than in the other countries for which data were available (Tv 1).These experiences are important for healthy social, brain, and emotional development. Children who watch too much TV or are absorbed by screen time have less time for interactions and for free play, which are both important for healthy development (Screen).

Watching television and doing homework at the same time is a negative effect on kids. While watching TV kids should, make connections to history, books, places of interest, and personal events. Talk about your personal and family values, as they relate to the TV show. Parents should encourage kids to be involved in hobbies, sports and peers. Your child can learn to use the television in a healthy and positive way. Parents need to limit kids screen time because this is getting ridiculous and out of control. They should point out positive behavior to their kids, such as cooperation, friendship and concern of others. If kids watch TV and do homework at the same time, they should change their actions because once they get older they will regret that they didn’t have better ways of studying.
