A Letter to My Future Daughter
You are beautiful, but you are more than that too. A girl’s greatest asset is not her beauty; remember that, darling. You hold infinities inside of you, are more intelligent that you could ever imagine, contain a gorgeously overwhelming amount of kindness within your heart.
But you are beautiful too. You may or may not believe these words, but you are absolutely beautiful, my love. I wouldn’t change a single thing about you, and you shouldn’t want to either. You’re the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen, and I know that poets would compare you to flowers and musicians would sing songs that compare your eyes to the sky, but I can’t think of anything beautiful enough to compare you to. You are your own type of beautiful, my love, and I hope you see that every time you glance at your reflection.
And I know that you get sad sometimes. That’s okay; we all get sad sometimes. Remember that it’s alright to cry. It’s alright to break down and feel pain and feel numbness; it’s alright to feel. Just know that when are at your lowest, I will be right here to pick you back up. And yes, I know that you have the strength within you to pick yourself back up. But I want to hold your hand through the process. Remember, you don’t have to be strong all the time.
You don’t have to put on all that makeup if you don’t want to, but if you do, then wear the heck out of it.
Sometimes, heinous thoughts may crawl into your mind and distort your perception of yourself, and those around you, and this world that we live in. When that happens, I hope you’ll come to me, and we can lie in bed and talk about the universe, and cry about the wrongs on this earth, and eat all of the best comfort foods. I’ll hold your hand and play with your hair, and when we’re done talking you can fall asleep in my lap, just like you did when you were a toddler.
Never forget that you are still young and still fragile, and you need to treat yourself kindly. There is no sense in being mean to yourself, my love.
He shouldn’t leave you alone when you’re sad or ignore you when he’s angry. He shouldn’t ditch you to see his friends. He shouldn’t flirt shamelessly with other girls while he’s holding your hand. He shouldn’t yell at you or poke fun at your insecurities. He shouldn’t ever lay a hand on you.
He should hold you closer when you’re crying and talk to you when he’s frustrated. He should put you above most other things in his life. He should hold your hand tight and stare into your eyes and only your eyes. He should whisper softly to you, compliment you freely, look at you like you created the entire universe.
He should be like your father.
Never forget that I am here for you always, my love. I want to hear every single thought that goes through your mind. I want you to tell me all of your heart’s desires. I want to sit beside you when you are happy and heartbroken alike.
I hope you never feel alone, because I am right here. Always.
