Humanity has evolved in its ways of equality and morality over the past one-hundred years and has grown for the better since the ages of mass slavery and genocide, but as this world changes with the people inhabiting it, the minds of sick human beings change as well. There will always be good and evil in this world as that is something that cannot be changed, but looking into some of the actions of the evil can give people a different view on modern society. Claiming humans in modern society is barbaric and unethical, but for many of the “owners” of the “traffickee” their actions are completely justified. An example of evil actions in the world today is human trafficking. Although not discussed regularly in first-world countries such as America, human trafficking is a controversial issue across the globe. People are sold like products to other people for such things as labor, scientific experimentation, organ donation and sex. The victims end up scarred physically and/or mentally, and many end up dead.

According to a study carried out by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC), around 800,000 people are trafficked across our borders each year. Whether it is into the United States or out, the transports happen and happen fast. The NHTRC also claim that 1.2 million children were trafficked globally in the year 2000, mostly female (80%) and around 50% of those recorded were minors (NHTRC Statistics). On a national level, the occurrences of human trafficking are tremendously higher than that in the United States, but the numbers reported on trafficking in the U.S alone is shocking.

The NHTRC has also compiled data from sources against U.S human trafficking and prostitution and the data is definitely something to look at. Between 100,000 to 300,000 minors have been prostituted in the United States. These average age of these girls is around 13 years, most being controlled by pimps that force the young women to have sex with adult males (NHTRC Statistics). The pimps that control these girls should most definitely be punished for their actions and each new occurrence should be heard as people need to be informed on disturbing subjects such as human trafficking.

Even if human trafficking is not nearly as apparent in the United States as in other countries, this horrible may be occurring “under our noses” in areas around U.S citizens today. In Nevada, 400 minor sex trafficking victims were found in Las Vegas, all in one month, May 2007 as well as 435 pimps arrested for illegal prostitution from 1996 to 2007 (Las Vegas – Prostitution/Trafficking). These pimps knew perfectly well what they were doing, whom they were effecting and how they were changing the lives of the poor victims they controlled. These people are almost inhuman in the way they carry out these tasks and many seem unaffected by what crimes they committed.

In interviews with both pimps and human traffickers, the men responsible for carrying out these ethically incorrect dealings seemed to think that they were doing the young women favors. These men believed that what they were doing helped the women and the men (and/or women) they would please. Their mindset seems to be that they are positively influencing the people by running a “business” and that by doing so, help everyone as a whole (Interview with 25 Pimps) (Human Trafficker Gives Rare Video Interview).

It seems illogical that someone would think so positively about a task that has been categorized as unethical and morally wrong, but the traffickers believe in what they do, and that running their businesses helps society thrive. No matter what kind of deal the victims will get into, it seems almost completely negative. Human trafficking is a horrific thing, but in a world without the decline of evil, things like these are sadly inevitable. But anyone can help out the thousands of people being trafficked today. It is always good for one to be alert and attentive to their surroundings, and doing so may help save another’s life. Any suspicion or evidence of human trafficking should be reported to the police or dedicated organizations such as the NHTRC by calling 1-888-373-7888 or texting HELP or INFO to 233733. One of our only ways to help out those around us, is to be informed about the evils of this world.
