Dear Annie,

It has been a long time since we have seen you. Things have changed so much since I have last seen you. The war and the revolution has changed everything. Most of us are in hiding and trying to survive on scraps of food. It feels like yesterday I was just a normal city girl living with my mother, father and older brother. Things were quite simple back then.

Technology has changed so much that it has made life dangerous here. Technology has made wars and crime much easier and more brutal. My brother and I had to fight to find food and live on our own after our parents were killed. When my parents died fourteen years ago, my brother Justin really grew up and is now like a second father to me. Ever since the president abandoned the country and the states declared war on each other, the country has been in total chaos. As the war dragged on, the fighting was becoming too much to bear. Cities have been destroyed and millions of lives have been taken. No one is safe around here. I wish I was with you where it is probably much safer. All of us are bearing the terrible cold with very little food. No one knows what to do anymore. And sadly all of us know that we are going to die. Even the small naive children have accepted it. Even though we spend our time dreading the next day, we still have some hope and dream that the chaos will stop and things will go back to normal. If that ever happens, we can be together again. Unfortunately things just keep getting worse. Our food supply is very low and soon all of us will starve. I used to love eating ice cream as a little girl but now it is nearly impossible to even get bread.

In spite of all the suffering around me, I still think about you now and then. How are you and you little sister Jane? I hope you are well. We all try to keep our hopes up but mine are getting smaller every day. Hopefully one day we will be reunited again.

                    Your friend,
                               Sarah
