Hypocrisy

I blankly stare out a window, even though I can only see darkness. I force my gaze away from the window and glance at many bookshelves. My gaze wanders around the inside of a building, spotting many tables with people hunched over them, writing. The scratch of pencils and the noise of flipping pages fills my ears. As I look around the room, I crinkle my nose at the pitiful people studying. They shouldn’t be studying, they should be enjoying their life right now. Life’s about fun, not studying. I stand up from my seat to get a can of coffee from the vending machine. Sitting back down, I pull out my phone to text my mom saying I won’t be able to come home tonight. As I look at the list of bonus work I have to do to boost my 120% grade, I curse as I realize that I’ll have to pull an all-nighter again.

A lot of people claim that grades don’t matter, yet they care about grades themselves. I was trying to make fun of those people. In the story, the main character is a student who often tells people how little grades matter- but cares about his own grades too much. He criticizes other people for studying, however, studies a lot himself. He wants to have the highest grade he physically can, even if it means sacrificing a night’s sleep for a couple of bonus points. The literary device I tried using was satire/irony.
