Summer and Autumn were polar opposites, yet somehow they were made for each other. From the first time that they met while playing with Legos at daycare, they knew that they would be best friends. They went through it all, starting kindergarten, surviving middle school, and making it to high school. Autumn dreamed of bigger things, going to a school full of incredible scholars, an apartment in the city, and getting out of their small town. The closest thing Summer had to a dream was college close to home, getting a decent job, a good husband, and making a life in her hometown.

They had no idea the friendship they formed as little kids would last so long, and they never expected how quickly it could fall apart.

Flash forward to their senior year in high school, Autumn was on a straight shot to Stanford while Summer was waitlisted for a small state school. Watching her best friend win awards and struggling to amount to half of that was awful for Summer. She spent her time trying her best to finish her homework, and waiting anxiously for the one application that didn't start with “We regret to inform you”.

While her best friend slowly but surely started drifting away she didn't know what to do. While she was working at a consignment store in the next town over, Autumn was collecting acceptance letters that she could only dream of, and making friends with a crowd that she couldn't hold a candle to.

Summer started working more, to pay for whatever education she got, and simultaneously holding on even tighter to Autumn. She decided to make a plan. When Summer got home from work that day, she cleared Autumn's schedule. When she took the box she had been keeping her savings in out from under her bed, she knew that they were going to make the most of their last summer.

I really love this piece, I think of it like the back cover for a novel.
