Remember

Remember him? Remember the day he came. Hearing the sound of laughter, the feeling of joy, the happiness. Remember the good times. Like the night before, before the laughter, joy, and happiness left. Remember waking up, ready to hear the laughter, feel joy, and happiness. But waking up to sadness, crying, and the police, the ambulance. The neighbor who comforted you after she heard what happened. Remember your mom sobbing, trying to think of something, after a talk with some guy in a yellow suit. Remember the sadness lingering around the house after he left, his laughter which no one would ever hear again. Remember the joy he spread that he would never spread again, the happiness he would never give again. Remember him.

The author's comments:

I was using the literary device, anaphora, where I start certain lines with the same word. The repeated word is “remember.” It’s a memory, something the narrator is remembering. It repeats the same word in each line and it’s slow, each line having an impact.
