A Moment of Time

She shrugged her bag off her back onto the ground and unzipped her outermost pocket. She thought about what she had to do as she searched around in her bag for her key: a few math problems, a couple of set pieces to write, an article to annotate...just the same as always. It only took her a few seconds of blind searching until she felt that familiar cool metal. Her key had a cute picture of a cat on it that she had liked better a few years ago-now it seemed childish, but she hadn’t asked for a new one because she didn’t want to hurt her parent’s feelings. She pulled it out of its incredibly stuffed tiny pocket and a couple of random items fell out. She knew she had to clean it out, but there was somehow never enough time. She shoved the items back inside the pocket and zipped it up. Stepping up to her door, she put her key inside the lock, gave it a quick twist, and fiddled with the worn handle until it gave away. She pushed the door away from herself hard-it banged against the wall, but she didn’t care at the moment. The hot breeze that came from outside turned into stuffy warm air as she stepped through the familiar doorway. She took off her shoes and started climbing the carpeted stairs to her room, her feet so used to walking the path that she could probably do it with her eyes closed, and wondered if things would ever change.

I challenged myself to create a scene descriptive enough that people could create a mental image of it without having ever been there, and I think I did a good job for a first attempt at writing like this.

My favorite line is the one about the key chain that you don't like as much as you once did. Great detail.
