Riding into Darkness
Red rushed into the hospital, her face drained of all color. All she had been informed of was her grandma Betty was in the hospital. For what she still did not know. The doctor had refused to tell her any details until she came. She ungracefully made her way to the reception desk located in the middle of the room.
"Hello- I'm here for Betty Hood. I'm her granddaughter." Red told the receptionist as she was on the verge of wheezing.
"Name please." The receptionist responded in a monotone voice.
"Adamina Hood." There were a few clicks on her keyboard before the receptionist looked up.
"Room 103, down the hall and to the left." She didn't bother thanking the receptionist as she began running once again. Red didn't stop til she got outside her grandma's room. Her feet slowly rooted themselves to the ground. She couldn't seem to find the courage to walk into the room. All she could manage to do was steal a glance at her grandmother. Her skin looked so pale compared to what it usually is. Red still had a hard time believing that she was in the hospital at all.
"You must be the granddaughter." She turned her head slightly to see a doctor standing next to her. At first glance, he was roughly 6 foot with dark brown, almost black hair. "I'm Dr.Wolfe, and she's my patient."
"Adamina. Listen could you tell me what happened?" She asked, cutting right to the chase.
"As far as we could tell, she slipped going down the stairs and hit her head."
"So it was an accident?" Red threw another question at the Doctor.
"Yes, it was an accident." For a second, Dr.Wolfe could have sworn that Adamina was smiling. He figured he was probably imaging things. 'That's what no sleep does to you.' The doctor told himself.
"Thankfully, all she has is a concussion and a few cracked ribs. She'll be going home in a few days." Dr.Wolfe noticed a change of emotion on her face, almost as if she were upset that she was going home. Again, he chalked that up to getting no sleep.
"Thanks, Doctor." Adamina then proceeded to walk into the room, with the Doctor's eyes glued to her.
(Wolfe's POV)
I stared with curious eyes as I watched Adamina walk into the room. After our conversation, I got this gut feeling in my stomach. Something deep inside was telling me that something wasn't right here. Usually when I got this feeling, It was right. I shook my head as I continued on with my workload. It was a few hours later when I glanced into Ms.Hood's room. Adamina was still in there, she was just pacing. She kept going back and forth in front of the hospital bed. Her grandmother must have still been under due to the painkillers. Why would she be pacing if her grandmother was going to be just fine though?
As that thought entered my mind, the feeling came back only it was stronger than before. I knew that I was not going to get rid of it unless I checked into things. I grabbed my cell out of my scrubs pocket. Scrolling through the contacts, I reached Dylan. Dylan is a friend of mine who used to be a lumberjack but now is the local detective. I quickly dialed his number and waited for him to answer.
"You got Dylan." He answered in typical Dylan fashion.
"Hey Man, listen I need a favor."
"Way to skip the pleasantries, Mark. What is it you need?" I could tell by the tone of his voice that he was curious.
"I have this patient I need you to look into, name's Betty Hood."
"May I ask why I'm running a background check on this person?" Dylan asked, his voice holding a suspicious tone.
"Something's fishy down here at the hospital. Can you put a rush on it?" I heard Dylan sigh on the other end.
"I really shouldn't do this..." Dylan started and I sighed, knowing he wouldn't do it. "Just this once though, ok Mark?" I did a small air fist bump thing before answering.
"Thanks Dylan, I owe you one."
"Of course you do. I'll call when it's done." With that done, Dylan had hung up. Now that everything's settled, the gut feeling in my stomach eased. I could now continue with my work knowing that something is being checked.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was later in the evening just as my shift was ending when I decided to check in with Ms.Hood and Adamina. As I approached the room from down the hall, I noticed Adamina on the phone outside the room. To not raise any suspicion, I slowed my walk. She must not have noticed me because she kept on talking to whoever was on the other end. The only thing I could pick out of the conversation was "Don't worry, you'll get it." That phrase could mean anything, but for some reason it brought back that feeling, except it was coming back as more of a knot now.
Adamina got off the phone just as I began to enter the room. When I looked at the hospital bed, Betty was sitting upright and watching the TV screen in the corner of the room. I glanced at the screen and noticed Wheel of Fortune playing.
"Good evening Ms. Hood, how're you feeling?" A smile found it's way on my face.
"Now that you're here, fantastic. You know I may be in the hospital, but I'll be damned if I miss my Wheel of Fortune." I couldn't help but laugh since my grandmother would be the same way, except with Jeopardy.
"Grandma, please tell me you're not still watching that?" I didn't notice that Adamina had come back into the room. I busied myself with checking Betty's vitals and her chart.
"Ohh would you just hush Red!" Once I made sure she was all good, I started to leave the room. My phone starts vibrating in my pocket. I checked the display screen and it read Dylan. I made my way out of the room before answering.
"What do you got?" I immediately asked, my brain jumping into overdrive.
"Alright, well I checked into Ms. Hood and found something interested. Someone took out an insurance policy. The beneficiary though can only collect if she were to die in some sort of accident." I knew something fishy was going on!
"That's great news, well not for her but you know. Who's the beneficiary?"
"It doesn't give me a full name, all it gives me it the name A.Hood, probably a family member of some sort." A.Hood. They can't mean A.Hood as in Adamina Hood, could they? I got a chill up my spine as I began to connect the dots; the smile when she heard it was an accident, the frown when she heard she was going to live.
"Thanks man, could you stop by the hospital? Make sure to bring the squad car." I didn't give Dylan a choice to speak as I hung up the phone. I knew I had about 40 minutes to get the proof that I needed, to stop the murder of an innocent woman.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I knew my shift was supposed to end, but I was determined to make sure nothing happened. If something did, Adamina would get caught. To make sure everything would be set for my plan that I had concocted, I put Betty to sleep. I gave her painkillers and they knocked her right out. Sure it wasn't ethical but her life may have been at risk.
About 20 minutes after Betty was put under, Adamina was hanging around the hospital room entry way. She kept walking back and forth in front of it. A few times it looked like she was going to go in, but she backed out at the last minute. Just when I thought she would never go in, she finally entered. It was now or never.
I waited a few minutes before casually walking over towards the room. I looked into the room through the window on the door. I could partially see Adamina holding one of the extra pillows in her hands. She kept continuously turning it over in her hands as if she was contemplating what she was going to do. With the pillow in hand, she began to walk over to the bed. She hovered next to her grandmother, then slowly began to raise the pillow over her. It's go time.
I bursted into the room, not caring what kind of noise I made. The minute I entered the room, Adamina stepped away from the bed and dropped the pillow.
"It's over Adamina, the jig's up." Her face began to match the color of tomatoes as she started getting flustered.
"Listen Dr.Wolfe, you don't know what you're talking about."
"Just give it up. You didn't exactly make it hard when you frowned after I told you she wasn't going to die. Kind of ruins your plans doesn't it....Red?"Me calling her Red lit the fuse I was hoping it would.
"Like you care. You don't know what it's like being thousands and thousands of dollars in debt. This is the only chance I have and I'll be damned if I don't take it." She practically spits out at me.
"How and why are you in debt for thousands?" I questioned her since my curiosity was getting the better of me.
"Let's just say my boyfriend and I got into the wrong crowds. This life insurance policy; worth 25,000 dollars. That will get us out of the hole and then some."
"I have to say, it's a well thought out plan. Except you didn't factor in one thing..."
"And what was that?" I took my phone out of my pocket and showed it to her that it was on, and recording.
"The fact that someone could record the entire thing." Her face went as white as a ghost as her mouth dropped open. My luck was just in as Dylan had rushed into the room, with backup.
"What's going on here Wolfe?" To save myself from explaining, I played the entire recording for him. At the end, he nodded and looked towards his back up.
"You know what to do boy." Without another word, the officer walked over to Adamina. He took out his cuffs and promptly handcuffed her before leading her out of the room.
"How did you know Mark, about all of this?" Dylan asked me.
"Let's just say my gut told me.
"Well because of your gut, there can now be a happily ever after for Ms.Hood." I had to agree with him on that.

I wrote this because I wanted to write own version of a fairytale (Little Red Riding Hood), but with a twist. I also wanted to challenge myself as a writer and not only modernize the story, but switch the roles of the hero and villain (Red is now the villain and the Wolf is the hero).
