a day of fiction
Once upon a time there was a group of people that got selected from a radio station to go on a fishing charter. They all had fished before but some had fished more than others. They all were excited to go but they had no idea what was instore. They didn’t know each other but they all knew they were about to go on an adventure.
They all met at the fast food restaurant that was going out of business so they had cheap food. They had a nice conversation about what fish they’ve caught and they told the best fishing stories that all of them had ever heard. Some of them had never fished before but some had fished all their life. One story was on catching a bass on a kayak and it was the first fish on his kayak. But the charter that they were going on they had kayaks and could catch Snook which is a saltwater fish that normally lives in shallow water. They were also going to catch goliath grouper that were on a ship wreck. They went to the place where the ship was located and it was sitting in the water with the captain was sitting on a chair looking at his phone. He looked up and saw all the older teenagers standing there. He put his phone in his pocket and introduced himself. His name was Carlos.
“I am captain Carlos.”
“Hi Carlos” James said.
Ethan, Luke, James, Carlos, and Nick all got in the boat. The boat had two motors and was about 50 feet long. They called their spots where they were going to fish. Captain Carlos got into the captain seat and started the boat the boat started up and then sputtered and died. The teenagers looked at each other confused. The Captain looked at them and smiled he said that
“The boat hasn’t been run in a while and needed a few times to start up.” Everyone looked at each other and nodding like it made sense. He turned the key and the boat started, he revved the engine and the boat went cruising out of the dock. The Captain shouted a big woo hoo and slowed down because it was a no wake zone. He gracefully went out of the inlet and went full throttle he soon got to his first spot. He slowed down and stopped the boat.
He said “it is about ninety feet down. It takes about three minutes for the bait to hit the bottom. They were first going to catch bonito. They dropped their baits down and as they went down the fish immediately grabbed it and took off. The sharp hook punctured the cartilage around their lip. The rod that James was holding snapped and all that was left was the reel. He quickly gave it to Captain Carlos and he tried to pull fish in but it got tangled around what was left of the rod and the line snapped. He cursed and told everyone not to worry because that was an old rod and would break sooner or later. He threw another bait out into the water and told everyone that it is an amberjack bait. He slowly reeled it in and after about fifteen seconds an amberjack took the bait and took off the line was slowly disappearing from the spool the fish was showing no sign of stopping he was sucking drag as fishermen would call it. He finally stopped swimming when the spool had about 30 yards of line left. Captain Carlos looked at all the passengers and smiled he said
“this is the fun part” all the passengers looked in awe as he pulled in all the line with the amberjack on it. He said that amberjacks were good eating and that it was about twenty pounds of food and they could feed a family for a week. They all dropped lines in and about twenty seconds later everyone had an amberjack on their line. All lines broke except for James’s line he felt movement and realized that it was pulling the boat. He looked at captain Carlos and Carlos looked at him and smiled. Then James’s line broke and he was sent flying back into the cushion seat. Carlos told everyone to get back in their seats and they were going to a different spot. He used the automatic anchor and pulled it up really fast. Then turned the keys in the ignition. The boat stuttered then died. He tried it again but revved the engine right after the boat started but died again. He went down in the engine room and came back up.
“alright everyone there has been some problems with the boat and I hope to fix them but for now I will have to call a tug boat.” He reached for his phone in his pocket. He pulled it out and tried to turn it on.
“is it dead?” James asked wondering if they were going to get out of here.
“it seems as if it is.” Carlos replied.
“I have mine.” Nick said.
“sweet.” Ethan said.
Nick pulled his iPhone and turned it on. It read 1:12 pm. He asked for the number and he told him what it was. Nick called the number but he didn’t hear anything. He looked at his phone and it read NO SERVICE. He then realized that there should be a walkie talkie on board the boat.
“hey Carlos do you have a walkie talkie like all boats have.” Carlos said he never got one installed because the boat was only three years old and never broken down. James got a scared look on his face and told everyone he had to go home because he had plans with his friends. Carlos then told everyone to go to the engine room and look around to see if they see anything weird. They all went down and James tripped and turned around to see what he tripped over. He looked and there was a big crack in the hull of the boat. He then saw that he tripped over the plug to keep water out of the engine room. The engine was getting about five gallons of water in it a second. James suddenly thought how much he was going to have to pay for the hull crack. Then he heard sirens and thought there was a rescue helicopter but really Carlos had turned on the flare siren and that shot a flare into the air and had a siren coming from it. He quickly thought about the kayaks on the back of the boat. He ran up the stairs and told Carlos what his plan was. Carlos thought it over and said it was a good plan. He pressed a button and 5 kayaks came out of the back of the boat. They each had trolling motors on them. They gracefully glided until a rope that was connected to the boat stopped them short. Carlos, James, Nick, Ethan, and Luke each got in a kayak and started up the trolling motors. They went away from the boat and a flare went up but never ignited. It came crashing down on the boat and hit the boat just in the right spot and it exploded. Water and flames both went up into the air. All of the teenagers looked at it in awe. They stared like it was the coolest thing they’ve ever seen. The water quickly engulfed the flames. The boat started sinking down. It’s American flag flapping in the wind. Then it was quiet. All you could hear were birds chirping and the hiss of the trolling motor.
They all became friends after that. They knew that this experience was a once in a lifetime thing. The first night they slept on an island was a beautiful one. They looked up and saw the stars. They realized what a beautiful world they lived in. They sighed in awe and from that point on they were friends forever. When they would meet over time to get a drink at the bar if someone became drunk then one of their friends would drive them home. They were friends for the rest of their life. Once they got home they turned on the news they realized that they were on it. The boat that they were on was a drug dealers. And he was hiding underneath the cabin. When the boat started having problems he jumped out of the boat and was soon captured by police.
They were considered hero’s all four of them and they promised never to leave each other. They each got a reward of a million dollars for being on the boat. Even though they didn’t do anything they then realized that it is not the work that you do, but the people you hang out with that you must stop.
