Dead-End Job
It’s 7:45 and I know I have to wake up in hopes of achieving just one more moment of bliss, one more moment of escape from the dullness that is my life. My surroundings are a mix of depressing gray and dim beige. I watch as people scowl at their cubicle walls, probably thinking about how inconspicuous their future will be if they don’t get out of this place soon. No one really does work here, hours are spent playing with rubber bands and trinkets on my desk; the last 30 minutes is when the work gets done. You’d be surprised how much work you can do in a short period time when you have to. My ears are filled with the sounds of telephones, printers, and computers clicking. It’s one o’clock now, around the time in which the daydreaming begins. I imagine that I have an important corporate job and not my normal 9 to 5 one. I imagine that I have friends supporting me instead of having one acquaintance. I imagine having a family to come home to and not my dirty, tiny apartment. But most importantly, I imagine that I’m away from this place, this job. I’m awakened by the sound of disgruntled coworkers as they sluggishly gather their things and shuffle to their cars. Although the day is finally over, I am fully aware that I will have to relive it the next day.
