Sand spit in my face as I walked through the desert, the sun beaming at me as if it was a god and I was its victim. My mouth haven’t tasted the taste of sweet water in a long, long time, while my eyes burned viciously, making them weaker they’ve ever been before. They struggled to stay opened to the bright light of the blazing sun. I knew I wouldn’t get very far in this condition, but as a servant to my king, I had a duty to serve him like any proper respectable camel would. My muscles wobbled, my head exhausted with the heat. I felt water brim into my eyes as a handful of cherries fell down into the hot sand, and I knew this was the end for me. My weak tongue caresses my lips, sensing the dry, scaly texture of my skin. I am famished, fatigued, and steaming, but I know I would have a long trail to get through if I ever wanted to get back to the kingdom. The camel next to me looked at me in the same tone of sympathy and scorn. Sand shaping into waves blew through us,, each time sputtering in our tired faces, and we didn’t even care much, anyway. The ground rumbled as if it too was sizzling, and we were its prey. I scrunched my eyes a little, wincing at the pain of the sand crunching inside my eyelids. I looked out in the distance, expecting to see nothing. My swollen eyes landed in a small palm tree and a pool of water. Suddenly, my eyes widened, bursting into excitement. Water! I realized. I gazed at the other camel’s way, showing her the direction of the wonders I was seeing. Before the other camel could say anything, I trotted to the distance, not caring about the smokey sizzle of the sun against my skin, or the burdensome weight on my back. I made my way through the ghostly desert, hearing a faint call of my name in desperation behind me, knowing my partner was baffled and confused as though she didn’t understand why I was going the wrong direction. I never looked back. I focused my frail eyes into the paradise I was seeing, and my mouth finally watered in anticipation. My teeth throbbed as I finally got to the pond. I was too excited to wait for the other camel, and bent my neck for a long drink. Before I could taste the water with my tongue, my partner appeared, pushing me away violently. I felt furious, my eyes darkening at the thought of this camel taking away my only chance to survive, but when I looked back at the pond, it was gone. I apologized to the camel with my eyes, realizing what i’ve done. Shame ran through my veins as I thought of death in my brain, knowing we had no chance to survive. She began to slowly trot back to our normal trail as if she was walking to meet death, and I followed her into the gleaming sun. It seemed to be laughing at us in a way, daring us to defy it some more, cheating us of death. I forced myself to take another step as the sun brightened even more. I shut my eyes, but the sun was now closer and glared at me in the eye. I tried to look away, but it flashed in the other direction. I had nowhere to escape, but then suddenly I didn’t have to. Darkness engulfed me.
