" I'm hungry," Katie exclaims as her stomach grumbles, "what's for dinner?" As she looks at her mother, her mother looked back at her and says annoyed " didn't I already tell you five times that we are going out for dinner because we need to go buy groceries." Katie racks her brain for the last five times that her mother had told her, " Nope, don't remember." After that, Katie goes up to her room, got on her phone, and played her favorite game till her mom says it is time to go. An hour later, Katie heard her mom call her from downstairs. "Ok, I'm coming." Katie grabbed her jacket and runs down to the living room." Where are we going?" Katie asks curiously. " You'll see," as her mom says with a big smile. They got in the car and drove out of the driveway. As they drove away Katie thought about the thing she wished for most in her life, for her family to be back together. Unfortunately Katie's mother and father divorced about two years ago. " I wish," says katie longingly.

      Katie and her mom arrive at the restaurant they are going to. They drove up in front of a big, neon blue sign reading Chan's Chinese Restaurant. " Yes!" Katie shouts. " My favorite restaurant." As Katie and her mother walked in they could smell the warm smell of freshly made food. " Table for two please," Katie's mom said. "Right this way." As they were led to their table, the aromas keep filling every spot in her nose. " Your food will be here shortly." As they waited for their food they talked about their day and how school was and what they did at work. "Yay, the food is here." Plates full of chow mein and fried rice came ready at their fingertips. Shortly after they finished eating the waitress brought the check and two fortune cookies. Her mom took the check and one of the fortune cookies and gave the other one to Katie. " I hope my fortune is that the check will be decent ." Katie giggles and opened her fortune cookie. She took out the little white paper and reads it, " your wishes will soon come true." After her mom pays, they get home around 8:30. They both get ready for bed and say goodnight. "Goodnight Katie, I love you." " I love you too mom, goodnight." Katie gets in bed and goes right to sleep.
       The next morning, Katie's mom needs to go to the market to get groceries. "I'm too tired to go anywhere, can I just stay home?" " Sure sweetie, I'll be back in an hour." She walks out the door and closes it. Katie turns the T.V. on to her favorite show and starts watching. A few minutes after her mom leaves the driveway, she hears a knock a the door. Thinking it's her mom, she opens her the door. When she opens the door, to her surprise, it isn't her mom, it is a peppy woman who looks around thirty. "Can I help you miss?"Katie says to the woman. " Hello, I was recently aware that you got one of my fortunes." "What?" says Katie with confusion. " I am authorized to grant you 5 wishes of which you choose." Katie looks at her with a blank face and says " How am I supposed to believe that?" The lady looks at her with a questioning look. " Well you should, I'm telling the truth." "Ok, prove it then." The lady looks at her and says "Gladly." She takes out a stack of cards. " Pick a card." Katie takes a card. " Um, queen of diamonds." Katie looks at her card, "Ya, but a stupid magic trick isn't going to get you anywhere." " Look at it again." Katie rolls her eyes and looks down at her card again. " She really is telling the truth," says the card with a distinct woman's voice. "ahhh!" Katie drops the card. " What was that?"  Katie says out of breath. " Your proof." Katie looks at this lady with mixed emotions. " We haven't been formally introduced, hello, my name is April, and I will be granting you 5 wishes."
     "So you really grant wishes and stuff like that, " Katie says excitedly. " Yup, you name it you have it." Katie had never thought in her wildest dreams that she would get something like this. " So I can ask for 1,000 dollars and it would just come to me." "Yes, if that is what you really want," April says. " Just to test it out, yes that is what I really want." Katie closes her eyes and waits for it. She opens her eyes and there are stacks of 20 dollar bills all around her." That's awesome!" Katie exclaims.     
April then explains to her that she can only be seen by the finder of that fortune and that when the 5 wishes are up, she has to leave. " But this is so cool that I get to have a Genie." April just smiles. Throughout the day Katie makes another two wishes. One for the guitar she had always wanted and the other was to have a new pair of really expensive shoes that she had always wanted. The next wish she made would change her life forever.
    " April , where are you?" Katie said anxiously. "I'm over here Katie." Katie runs over to her, " I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier." April smiles at her. "What is your fourth wish sweetie?"Katie runs it through her head again and again until she finally says " I wish my parents were back together." April looks at her with a discerning look on her face. " Katie I'm not so sure about that wish, tampering with family is very bad in the magic rules." " No, please, I would do anything to keep my family together, please." April thinks about it for a long time. " Ok, fine, but I warned you if it doesn't go the way you planned." April claps her hands together once and it felt as if Katie's world was getting so much brighter." Thank you so much April, I couldn't thank you enough." April gives a half smile and disappears. Katie runs inside only to see that her dad is sitting right there in the kitchen reading the newspaper. "Dad!" Katie screams excitedly. "You're back!" Katie goes and hugs him. " Um, who are you sweetie?" katie's dad says in concern. "What do you mean dad, I'm your daughter katie." "Um, I don't have any kids."
Katie looks at him in disbelief. " Wait, you really don't know me?" " No sorry kid, I'm afraid not." Katie's eyes start welling up with tears. She runs to her room to see if all her stuff is still there. When she opened the door all she saw was an office place. " My wish came true, my parents are back together, just without me."
  She runs back downstairs where her father is, "I'm so sorry to barge into your home like this, but I'm lost and I have no where to stay, may I please stay with you?" Katie asks. " Of course," "we have a guest bedroom upstairs." While Katie settles in, her father comes up to where she is staying and says if you want some dinner, my wife made chicken." " Oh, thank you, I will be down in a minute." Katie washes her face and goes back to her room. "April." All of a sudden April pops out of nowhere. " Take back the wish, I didn't know it was going to be like this." "I did tell you tampering with families is bad news." " Well the good thing is you can make this whole situation go away." Katie breathes a sigh of relief. " But it will cost you every wish you have made and you last wish." "I can't live like this April." Katie breathes in heavily. " Do it, take all my previous wishes away and give me my life the way it was before." " Are you sure you want this to be your final wish?" " Yes, bye April,I'll miss you" As April claps her hands together, April gives that big full smile. In a flash, everything was as it was before. Her mom and her, and that is the way she liked it.
