The Hunter and the Wolf
Nikita was a 17 year old girl. All her life her father never treated her like she was a part of the tribe. Her mother died when she was born so she grew up cleaning animals and cooking their food what she learned from the other women in the tribe. She had made herself a bow and a spear and taught herself to hunt.
One day she was woken up with loud screaming and yelling. When she ran outside to see what was going on, she saw an enormous wolf. He was absolutely beautiful. He was all white with bright blue eyes, as magnificent as the night sky.
Eventually the hunters chased the wolf away, and they started to get their weapons together to go for a hunt to find the wolf. Nikita’s father asked her which way the wolf went, she told them to go the wrong direction so she could go after the wolf the prove to her father that she could capture and kill the wolf. Nikita gathered her things, and her necklace that her mother left for her. It was a blue and purple stone and it was said to bring good luck, said the others from the tribe. So Nikita went on her journey to find the beast.
The first night on her journey Nikita rested the top of a hill. She was exhausted from walking and she was scared, when she started to feel the urge to go home, the northern lights caught her eye. They were so bright and beautiful, Nikita suddenly felt warm and safe, she knew that this was her mother's spirit telling her to go on and complete her quest.
The next day Nikita went out to search for the wolf. She searched for hours, she was at the point where she was about done for the day. All of a sudden she heard growling, she looked into the bushes and saw the wolf. They looked into each others eye and he stopped growling, he seemed calm. Nikita walked closer and closer to the wolf, the closer she got to the wolf the more she realised that he was trying to protect something. She then saw two little pups. Nikita figured that their mother was killed by hunters. She then realised that he had been taking food to feed his young. NIkita had the bright idea of bring the wolf to tribe so he could live and eat with the rest of the tribe and also feed his young. She decided his name should be Sitka, named after her best friend that had passed away. Sitka allowed Nikita to pick up his two pups and wrap them up some of her extra clothing and tied them to her chest. Nikita, Sitka and his pups went on their way to Nikita’s tribe, without knowing if her tribe will allow the wolves into the village.
They were second in their journey back to the village they ran into the her father and the rest of the hunters. NIkita was frantic about what could possible happen if they would see Sitka. She had the wolves hide while she went out to talk to her father and the other hunters. Nikita’s father ran toward her with rage, he had not known that she had left the tribe. While he was running toward her Sitka ran out to protect Nikita and her father just stopped. His face was full of questioning looks, he couldn't understand why the wolf would want to protect Nikita. He then saw that she was holding something, “NIkita was are you holding?!” her dad said. “They are Sitka’s pups, they are the reason he was coming into the tribe and taking food. Their mother must have been killed and he was just trying to keep his family alive, just like you dad.” Nikita’s fathers face changed from anger to understanding. He knelt down and look at Sitka with apologetic eyes, he held out his hands and Sitka cautiously walked up to him with his head down and ears back. Nikita was in complete shock when she saw what happened. Sitka let Nikita’s father pet him. He had learned at that very second that Sitka only did these things to protect his family, just as he does for his own.
Nikita’s father decided that it was a wonderful idea to let them stay in the village, he thought that if the wolf was kind to all the hunters that tried to kill him, that he would be kind to the woman and children in the tribe. Once they returned to the tribe everyone was scared of what could happen if the wolf would ever become angry. The hunters told the tribe that the wolf was harmless. Everyone came to see the wolf and the two little pups and saw how harmless they all were. Sitka and the pups lived in the village, they played, ate, and slept together. Nikita and Sitka were meant to find each other, it was as if Nikita’s mother had sent Sitka to look over her.
