"Hope is the thing with feathers" Emily Dickinson

A chilling wind swept over the edge of the cliffs making the air cool. It was midnight. A beautiful young girl in a light blue sleeveless dress looked down over the edge of a cliff at the jagged rocks below. The streets were silent behind her. The Community was asleep just as it should be the girl thought. Surely the people against her freedom were waiting out there somewhere. Waiting for danger or someone like her who would not corporate with their common ways.

The girl looked up at the moon, full. She wanted it to be that way. Thats why she wanted to leave tonight. The girl smiled and took off her stolen heeled shoes. The Community would not approve of her wearing the dress either and the thought made her smile.

The waves at the bottom were crashing up against the rocks sneding mist up to the edge where the girl stood. She looked at her silver circular shaped watch and carefully removed it from her wrist. She looked down at the rocks below her knowing that once she threw the watch the guards would come and she would need to be ready. She grabbed the watch in her fist and threw it at the rocks.

Small pieces of silver burst into the air when it hit the rocks and disappeared into the waves. The girl with the plain blue dress and long black hair turned her back to the edge waiting patiently for the guards she knew would show their faces.

A few minutes' later guards wearing large puffy army outfits showed up surrounding her, all carrying small weapons aimed at her.

"Please step away from the edge and follow us," a tall man with blond hair told her. He looked young, to young. Carrying a burden no one should carry.

The girl stood exactly where she was not wavering a muscle. The only change was the pity in her eyes for the young guard.

"Please miss, we don't want anyone to get hurt."

The stared back at him with a blank expression of her face. He lies she thought. All the Community does is rob us of our free will and control us.

She gave the man a sad smile before extending her arms out like a bird and looking up at the moon above them. This is what I want she thought, I want to leave to be free. She turned her gaze back to the man before leaning back plunging toward the waves below. She heard screams as she fell. She though didn't scream just fell with a smile firmly on her face. She should have hit the jagged rocks and died, with her body hidden by water. She didn't. Right before impact large dark blue wings like those of a blue jay sprouted from her back. Her body was lifted higher and higher away from the Community and towards her freedom.

The beautiful girl witht the long jet black hair, light blue dress, and elegant blue wings was gone. On a journey far from the life she once lived. Whether her journey be alone or with others who decided their own fate, the girl with blue wings was free.

The author's comments:

This piece is about a girl who decided her own fate. She was unhappy with the way her home "The Community" worked so she left to find her freedom. The meaning behind this story is that no matter what before we can fly and have good days we always fall. This girl fell her entire life until she decided to do something about it and fly. Always get back up after falling so you can fly.
